Fatal Collision on R23 Claims Five Lives in Mpumalanga
In a tragic turn of events, five people lost their lives in a serious accident on the R23 between Balfour and Greylingstad in Mpumalanga on Thursday night. The collision involved a truck and a sedan, occurring shortly after 19:30.
All five victims were passengers in the sedan and were declared dead at the scene. Emergency services from the Mpumalanga Department of Community Safety and Security were dispatched to the area and remained on-site until late in the evening to manage the situation.
The department confirmed that an investigation is currently underway to determine the cause of this devastating collision.
Earlier the same day, another crash on the R23 had already claimed four lives. This previous incident occurred between Standerton and Perdekop, where a sedan collided with a light delivery vehicle. Mpumalanga Community Safety MEC Jackie Macie reported that all four deceased in that crash were adults aged between 30 and 40, including the driver. The driver of the other vehicle and a child sustained serious injuries and were transported to a medical facility in Standerton for treatment.
The events highlight ongoing concerns regarding road safety in the region, with the R23 now witnessing multiple fatal accidents in a single day. Authorities are urging all road users to exercise caution and adhere to traffic regulations to prevent further tragedies on the roads.
