Tears Flow as DJ Warras' Son Delivers Heartrending Tribute at Memorial
An auditorium packed with mourners was overcome with emotion on Friday as Ethan, the eldest son of Warrick “DJ Warras” Stock, delivered a deeply moving tribute to his slain father during a memorial service held at the Galleria Conference and Expo Centre.
The memorial service served as a poignant farewell to Warras, who was tragically shot and killed on Tuesday outside a hijacked building in Johannesburg’s CBD. Authorities suspect the murder was a targeted hit connected to ongoing property disputes. According to EWN, four suspects have been taken in for questioning in connection with the killing.
Ethan, struggling to hold back tears, addressed the attendees with a heartfelt eulogy. “My father was my hero. He’s the person I look up to. He’s my inspiration. He was my rock and my foundation,” he said. “My dad’s legacy will live through me and my little brothers, and I’ll do everything in my power to make him proud. I love you, Dad, and I hope justice is served.”
He further described his father as a man of unwavering courage and resilience, who consistently stood firm in his beliefs and worked tirelessly to ensure the well-being of his family.
Ethan also shared personal anecdotes, shedding light on a side of Warras often overshadowed by media portrayals. "When I was in the hospital for 10 days, my father stayed by my side from early morning until late at night, no matter how challenging it was," he recounted. "He was there whenever we needed guidance or advice because he was the wisest in our family."
He movingly described Warras as "the life of the party, the brightest light in every room. He was always there when we needed him."
Prior to Ethan’s tribute, DJ Warras’ elder sister, Nicole Stock Mabuza, delivered a moving eulogy, describing her brother as a larger-than-life figure.
“I realise it now, today, that he never belonged just to us. He belonged to the country. He belonged to the nation and the people,” she said, acknowledging the widespread impact her brother had on those around him.
After reading a scripture verse, Nicole spoke with raw emotion about her grief and anger at her brother’s sudden passing.
“I haven’t really cried because he wouldn’t want me to. But I’m angry—so angry because my brother was taken away. His voice was silenced when it should’ve been its loudest,” she said, her voice filled with sorrow.
She poignantly noted the tragic irony of Warras’ life being ended by a weapon he respected but knew carried permanent consequences.
The memorial service was attended by a host of Warras’ close friends and colleagues, including Sizwe Dhlomo, Pearl Thusi, DJ P.H., Marvin Cohen, and Penuel Mlotshwa. Each shared their fondest memories of the DJ, reflecting on his unforgettable personality and the tremendous influence he had on those around him. They remembered Warras as a spirited and courageous man whose life ended tragically too soon.
Nicole shared her grief and pride, acknowledging that her brother was loved not only by their family but by the nation.
The outpouring of love and support at the memorial service underscored the significant impact Warras had on the lives of many, both within his family and throughout the broader community.
The DJ’s funeral is scheduled for next week, with further details to be announced in due course.
