Record Label Boss Loses Cape Town Penthouse in Auction Amid Maintenance Dispute

Cape Town – A prominent record label boss has allegedly lost his Cape Town penthouse after it was auctioned for R1.7 million, amid accusations of failing to pay maintenance for his daughter, who is in high school. The sale follows alleged repeated court attempts to receive unpaid child maintenance from the businessperson, who was allegedly taken to court by his ex-wife, whom he married in 2001 and divorced in 2016.

The auction, held by the Sheriff of the Cape Town High Court, was reportedly to recover about R300 000 allegedly owed by the businessperson. The penthouse, comprising a lounge, bathroom, covered balcony, shower, toilet and studio unit, is located in one of Cape Town’s luxury hotels with views of Table Mountain and Lion’s Head.

In a previous interview, the ex-wife claimed she gave him the record label and two properties, one in Cape Town and another in Johannesburg, as he was allegedly fighting over finances and she just wanted out. She, however, claimed at the time that after the divorce, he made the situation personal and stopped taking care of their child.

According to a source close to the situation, the man “is available for vacations and good times, but not education”. The source claimed the mother has been the primary caregiver for the past three years with no assistance from the father. The daughter reportedly attends a private school, which costs about R20 000 per month.

The insider stated that the mother allegedly transferred the maintenance matter from a magistrates’ court in Johannesburg to the high court in May, as she believed the lower court did not take her concerns seriously. The property was allegedly scheduled to be auctioned in August but was delayed until she began putting pressure on the Sheriff handling the case.

When contacted for comment, the mother said she could not talk because her ex-husband had a restraining order and warrant of arrest against her. According to the source, the ex-wife is not relieved yet, as the transfer process is still pending. “She can’t be relieved until the money reflects in her account. Next year is the matric year for her daughter, and she still pays for everything alone. Hopefully, this happens soon,” the source said.

The man did not confirm the allegations but confirmed that he had a restraining order and warrant of arrest issued against his ex-wife. Believing the ex-wife had spoken to the journalist, he said: “If it’s published, she will be arrested. You do know what I am talking about.” When asked to confirm the auction and the maintenance dispute, he repeated warnings about the “danger” of publishing the story. “It is shameful that you are trying to put another woman in jail or in a situation where she might have to go to court. You should be ashamed of yourself,” he said before hanging up.

The ex-wife’s lawyer confirmed that the penthouse was sold and that the parties were awaiting completion of the transfer process. She declined to provide further details but disputed that the auction was related to maintenance, saying it was to recover a separate debt.
