Rachel Kolisi, navigating her divorce from Springbok rugby captain Siya Kolisi, has offered a poignant glimpse into the emotional complexities of solo parenting. In a recent TikTok post, Rachel shared the raw realities of adjusting to life after separation, sparking a mix of support and criticism.
The couple, who were married for eight years, announced their separation in October 2024 after being together for over a decade. Their breakup made headlines across South Africa, with many expressing shock and sadness as they were one of Mzansi's most admired couples.
Rachel and Siya met in 2012 and tied the knot in 2016, building a home together, raising their two children, and also caring for Siya's younger siblings. When they shared the news of their split, they emphasised that the decision was mutual and respectful, and that their primary focus would remain on raising their family together.
In her recent TikTok post in July, Rachel shared a vulnerable moment from her journey, using Sia's powerful track "Elastic Heart" in the background, which includes the lyric: "Let's be clear, trust no one. You did not break me, I'm still fighting for peace."
The video encapsulates the emotional complexities of parenting and navigating divorce. Rachel shared her anxiety about her "laaities" going on their first solo trip to visit dad Siya Kolisi.
In the video, she said: "In the process of getting divorced, today was the first time my kids flew to see their dad without me. It was hard."
Rachel also reflected on the emotional weight of packing for her children's adventure, but it wasn't all "hartseer" (heartache).
She laughed: "It's only a few days, so packing was light. Never going to feel normal packing for my kids to leave."
As the night before their departure unfolded, Rachel shared her struggle with anxiety, revealing a glimpse into her mental health journey.
"This part (the night before) and when they leave is usually the hardest … Slept three hours and decided to call my gran and ask if she'd like to go away with me while the kids are away. She said yes, so feeling better that I won't be alone."
In an emotional climax, Rachel encountered her second anxiety attack while preparing for her day: "Very swiftly moved into my 2nd ever anxiety attack. Headed to the airport … Five minutes before my first meeting – it was a rough day for numerous reasons."
Rachel also shared lighthearted moments, such as braiding her daughter's hair before the trip. "I braid my daughter's hair so it doesn't need to be brushed while she's away… Sasha Fierce, of course, went with the longest braids she could find 738 hours at the salon later.."
The video sparked mixed reactions. While many offered support, media personality Minnie Dlamini simply said: "Sorry Mama."
Other users were more critical. "Fix your marriage. You are choosing the spotlight because you love the attention," said one user named Stan.
However, not everyone agreed with that view. Another user, Sharn, responded: "Watching this video I did not think of Siya. I felt for a woman going through something very difficult… divorce is up there as one of the top 3 things that causes stress."
Despite the noise, Rachel's message landed clearly – she's not just surviving the end of her marriage but also learning how to move forward with strength, honesty, and grace. Her willingness to share her experiences has resonated with many, highlighting the challenges and triumphs of navigating divorce and solo parenting in the public eye.
Rachel's openness about her mental health struggles has also been praised, as it helps to destigmatise these issues and encourages others to seek support when needed. By sharing her journey, Rachel is not only navigating her own challenges but also providing a source of inspiration and support for others going through similar experiences.
The Kolisis' separation has undoubtedly been a difficult time for them and their family, but their commitment to co-parenting and maintaining a respectful relationship is commendable. Rachel's willingness to share her emotional journey provides a valuable insight into the realities of divorce and the importance of self-care and support during challenging times.
