Shot Three Times By Her Own Husband: Gqeberha Woman Survives After Kwazakhele Cop Allegedly Uses Service Pistol In Domestic Shooting

A Gqeberha woman is currently receiving treatment in hospital after her 49-year-old police officer husband allegedly shot her three times with his state-issued service pistol before turning the gun on himself on Monday morning.

The horrifying incident unfolded at around 07:00 at the couple’s home on Bumbane Street in Ikamvelihle while two young children were inside the house.

According to police spokesperson Brigadier Nobuntu Gantana, the 49-year-old officer—who was stationed at the Kwazakhele South African Police Service (SAPS)—died after turning the firearm on himself, while his wife survived the shooting.

When responding officers arrived at the home, they found that both the policeman and his wife had been shot.

“She was rushed to a hospital, where she is receiving treatment for three gunshot wounds,” Gantana said.

“Two children who were in the home at the time of the shooting were not physically injured.”

Gantana confirmed that the firearm used in the attack was the officer’s SAPS-issued service pistol. Police have opened an attempted murder case alongside an inquest docket. Authorities stated that the exact circumstances leading up to the shooting remain under investigation, and no further details can be released at this stage.

 ‘Deeply distressing’

Eastern Cape police commissioner Lieutenant General Vuyisile Ncata called the shooting “deeply distressing” and extended his well-wishes to the wounded mother in hospital, the two young children, and the wider family left reeling from the tragedy.

“We recognise the trauma such incidents cause, and management will ensure that counselling and support are made available to those affected,” Ncata said.

Following the bloody incident, the provincial commissioner issued a direct plea to police officers across the Eastern Cape, urging any member going through a personal crisis to speak out before matters reach a breaking point.

“If you are experiencing emotional distress, domestic conflict, or any situation that feels beyond your control, please reach out for help through SAPS wellness services, a trusted colleague, or a professional counsellor,” said Ncata.

“Seeking help is a sign of strength, and support is available.”
