TSOMO – A quiet Tuesday morning in the Eastern Cape was shattered by a massive explosion that led to a catastrophic fire, claiming the lives of six foreign nationals. The victims, believed to be Bangladeshi nationals, were trapped inside a business premises on Tsomo Main Street as flames gutted the building before emergency services could reach them.
The tragedy unfolded in the early hours of 28 July 2026. At approximately 3:40 am, police officers patrolling near the Tsomo Police Station were startled by a loud blast. Following the scent of thick smoke, they discovered that MAA Cash and Carry, a prominent local shop, was already being consumed by an intense blaze.
Provincial police spokesperson Brigadier Nobuntu Gantana confirmed that the patrolling officers immediately rushed to the back of the premises after learning that people were residing on-site. In a desperate bid to save lives, police, private security personnel, and local community members attempted to break into the burning structure.
Despite their heroic efforts, the heat and smoke proved insurmountable. Only one person managed to escape the inferno, while six others remained trapped inside.
"Firefighters eventually arrived and managed to extinguish the blaze, although they faced significant challenges due to the thick smoke and the rainy weather conditions," Gantana stated. "Once the fire was brought under control, search teams entered the ruins and recovered the bodies of all six victims."
The employer of the deceased has identified them as foreign nationals. While official identification is still ongoing, reports from the scene suggest the victims were part of the local Bangladeshi business community. The survivor of the blaze is currently receiving medical treatment for injuries sustained during his escape.
The South African Police Service (SAPS) has since opened an inquest docket to determine the exact cause of the fire. Provincial Crime Scene Investigators and Local Criminal Record Centre teams have been on-site to comb through the wreckage for clues. At this stage, authorities have indicated that there is no immediate evidence of foul play, though the investigation remains wide open.
"We are looking into all possibilities," a police source commented. "The loud explosion heard by the patrolling officers is a key focus of our investigation. We need to determine if it was caused by a gas leak, an electrical fault, or some other factor."
The incident has sent ripples of grief through the small town of Tsomo. Local residents described the scene as "terrifying," with the orange glow of the fire visible from several blocks away. The joint effort by community members and security forces to rescue the trapped occupants has been praised, even though it ended in tragedy.
