Explosives hidden in rice bags? Malawian bus driver arrested at Beitbridge border post

A 39-year-old Malawian bus driver has been remanded in custody after allegedly being found transporting explosives hidden inside bags of rice at the Beitbridge Border Post, a case that prosecutors say underscores the continuing threat of cross-border smuggling of dangerous goods.

The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) said Gondwe Samson Tonne appeared in the Musina Magistrate’s Court on Monday on a charge of possession of explosives. His appearance followed his arrest on Sunday at Beitbridge, South Africa’s busiest land border crossing.

According to the NPA, Tonne was intercepted while entering South Africa from Malawi when members of the Border Management Authority (BMA) stopped the bus he was driving and conducted a search.

NPA spokesperson Mashudu Malabi said border officials inspected two bags of rice during the search and allegedly discovered four reels of detonating cord explosives. The explosives were estimated to have a street value of R100,000.

“The accused was arrested at the Beitbridge Border Post while entering South Africa from Malawi. Members of the Border Management Authority (BMA) stopped and searched the bus he was driving,” Malabi.

Investigators have not yet disclosed where the explosives were allegedly sourced, nor their intended destination inside South Africa. But the concealment method — hidden within bags of rice — has raised concerns about how easily hazardous material could be moved through ordinary cargo and personal belongings on cross-border routes.

The Musina Magistrate’s Court postponed the matter to July 8 2026 for profiling. Tonne remains in custody pending his next court appearance.

In a statement, the NPA praised border officials for the interception, saying their actions had prevented the suspected illegal movement of explosives into the country.

“The NPA commends the Border Management Authority for its vigilance and dedication in safeguarding the country’s ports of entry,” Malabi said.

It added that “the successful detection of the explosives highlights the importance of coordinated law enforcement efforts in preventing the unlawful movement of dangerous goods across South Africa’s borders.”

The arrest comes as authorities continue to tighten security at major border posts, particularly along routes frequently linked to cross-border crime, including the smuggling of prohibited and dangerous goods. Prosecutors say the state intends pursuing such cases firmly, given the potential public safety risks linked to explosives.

“The NPA remains committed to prosecuting offences involving the unlawful possession, transportation, and distribution of explosives without fear, favour, or prejudice,” Malabi said.
