Chilling CCTV Footage Exposes Brutal Execution in Lotus River: Police Hunt Gang After Cyclist Gunned Down in Broad Daylight

Cape Town, South Africa – A horrifying 100-second CCTV clip, depicting the cold-blooded execution of a man on a bicycle, has gone viral social media and is leaving the Lotus River community in shock,  prompting an urgent manhunt by police for a ruthless gang of gunmen. The viral footage, a stark testament to the escalating gang violence plaguing parts of Cape Town, captures a scene of unimaginable brutality that has left residents terrified and demanding answers.

The chilling video begins with the sound of approximately 20 gunshots echoing through the streets, setting a terrifying prelude to the unfolding horror. Moments later, a man desperately pedalling for his life is seen racing around a street corner, his bicycle a fragile shield against an unseen threat. He is relentlessly pursued by a speeding white vehicle, from which a man dressed in black hangs precariously out of the left backseat window, while two additional chasers on foot close in. The raw audio captures a chilling command, “stamp hom, stamp hom” (ram him, ram him), as the vehicle deliberately collides with the cyclist, knocking him violently off his bicycle and onto the unforgiving tarmac.

Injured and disoriented, the victim attempts a desperate escape on foot, scrambling to regain his balance and flee the relentless assault. However, his efforts are futile. The two on-foot suspects quickly catch up to the helpless man, who is still on the ground. In a horrific display of savagery, they unleash another volley of approximately 20 bullets, riddling the victim’s body and head. The sheer volume of gunfire, coupled with the victim’s defenceless state, paints a grim picture of a targeted and merciless assassination. With their gruesome task complete, the assailants calmly re-enter the waiting vehicle, which then speeds off, leaving behind a scene of utter devastation and a community gripped by fear.

Police spokesperson Captain FC van Wyk confirmed the grim details of the incident. “On 14 June at 5pm, Grassy Park SAPS members attended to a complaint of a shooting incident at the corner of Philip Road and Raymond Circle, Lotus River, where someone was shot and fatally wounded,” Van Wyk stated. Upon their arrival, officers discovered the body of a 42-year-old male, his face covered, a tragic symbol of the violence that had just transpired. “According to reports, the victim was riding on his bicycle when a vehicle knocked him over. When the victim tried to get up, the suspects shot him numerous times in the body and head. The suspects are unknown at this stage.”

A murder case has been opened, and the investigation is currently ongoing. While no arrests have been made, the motive behind the brutal killing is strongly believed to be gang-related. This suspicion is tragically common in areas like Lotus River, which fall within the broader Grassy Park precinct, a region frequently plagued by turf wars and retaliatory violence between rival gangs. The brazen nature of the attack, carried out in broad daylight and captured on camera, suggests a chilling disregard for law enforcement and human life, characteristic of organised criminal syndicates.

The impact of such public acts of violence extends far beyond the immediate victim and their family. Communities living under the shadow of gang warfare experience pervasive fear, trauma, and a profound sense of insecurity. Children are particularly vulnerable, growing up in environments where violence is normalised, and the sound of gunfire is an all-too-familiar soundtrack to their daily lives. The viral spread of the CCTV footage, while aiding in the investigation, also serves to amplify this trauma, exposing countless individuals to the raw brutality of the incident.

Community leaders and anti-gang activists have repeatedly called for more robust interventions from law enforcement and government to curb the relentless tide of gang violence in the Western Cape. They argue that while police investigations are crucial, a more comprehensive approach is needed, one that addresses the socio-economic root causes of gangsterism, provides opportunities for youth, and offers effective witness protection programmes to encourage community cooperation. The reluctance of witnesses to come forward, often out of fear of retaliation, remains a significant challenge for investigators.

This incident serves as a stark reminder of the urgent need for collaborative efforts between police, community organisations, and government agencies to reclaim these communities from the grip of criminal elements. The public’s assistance is vital in bringing the perpetrators to justice. Captain Van Wyk urged anyone with information related to the shooting to contact Crime Stop on 08600 10111, assuring anonymity for those who come forward. The hope remains that justice will be served, and that the relentless pursuit of those responsible will send a clear message that such heinous acts will not be tolerated.
