Ramaphosa Demands End to Middle East Bloodshed as Fuel Prices Spike

President Cyril Ramaphosa has urged global leaders to push for an immediate ceasefire in the Middle East, warning that escalating conflict is already hurting South Africa’s fragile economy. His call comes as oil prices surge, raising fears of another fuel hike that will hit households and commuters hard.

Speaking at a press briefing in Pretoria, Ramaphosa said: “South Africa stands for peace. We cannot watch as innocent lives are lost and global markets spiral into chaos. We call on all parties to cease hostilities immediately.”
The conflict, which has intensified in recent weeks, has disrupted oil supply routes and sent crude prices soaring. South African motorists are bracing for another increase at the pumps, with analysts predicting petrol could rise by more than R1 per litre this month.

Economist Annabel Bishop explained: “Global instability translates directly into higher costs for South Africans. Fuel hikes ripple through the economy, raising transport fares, food prices, and electricity costs.”

Taxi associations have already warned commuters to expect fare increases. “We cannot absorb these hikes. Passengers will feel the pain,” said a spokesperson for the South African National Taxi Council.

Civil society groups welcomed Ramaphosa’s stance but urged government to act domestically. “It is good to call for peace abroad, but what about cushioning South Africans at home?” asked activist Mandisa Khanyile.

The Department of Mineral Resources and Energy confirmed it is monitoring global markets but admitted South Africa has little control over international oil prices. Opposition parties seized on the issue, accusing government of failing to protect citizens from economic shocks.

Meanwhile, ordinary South Africans expressed frustration. “Every month it’s the same story. Petrol goes up, food goes up, and salaries stay the same,” said Johannesburg resident Sipho Dlamini.

Ramaphosa’s intervention highlights the interconnectedness of global politics and local realities. While his words may carry moral weight, the immediate challenge remains how to shield South Africans from the economic fallout.
