Johannesburg, Gauteng – A high-profile sexual abuse trial that has gripped the elite schooling community of Johannesburg reached a critical and disturbing point on Friday as a former teacher at the prestigious St John’s Preparatory School took the stand to defend himself against a mountain of harrowing allegations. Brett Nicholson, once a trusted educator at one of South Africa’s most exclusive private schools, is facing 25 serious criminal charges involving the alleged grooming and sexual abuse of more than a dozen children. While Nicholson has pleaded not guilty to every charge, his latest court appearance featured a bizarre and unsettling defence that centered on his decision to look at naked pictures of American singer Britney Spears with a 14-year-old pupil.
The trial, currently unfolding before the Gauteng High Court in Johannesburg, focuses on a series of incidents that allegedly took place when Nicholson was 32 years old. The charges against him are extensive and chilling: eight counts of sexual assault, 10 counts of sexual grooming of children, two counts of exposing his own genitals to children, and five counts of indecent assault. Despite the gravity of these accusations, Nicholson’s legal team put forward a version of events that has left many in the courtroom stunned. His lawyer told the court that the teacher saw “nothing unnatural” about a teenage boy wanting to look at naked women and admitted that Nicholson himself “wouldn’t mind having a look” at what the pop star looked like naked.
A key part of Friday’s proceedings involved the testimony of the State’s second witness, who is now a 34-year-old man. He told the court about the “amazing” bond he once shared with Nicholson, whom he looked up to as a father figure during his time at St John’s Prep. However, that bond was shattered during a sleepover at Nicholson’s house, which was located on the school grounds. The witness described a night that started with computer games but ended in a series of sexual acts. He even demonstrated to the court how he had been positioned on a special “kneeling chair” between Nicholson’s legs while they were allegedly browsing pornography together on the internet.
Nicholson’s defence team, led by advocate Sita Kolbe, offered a completely different version of that night. They claimed that Nicholson was simply preparing supper and making a bed for the boy when he noticed the teenager trying to get onto the internet to find pictures of Britney Spears. According to the defence, Nicholson decided to help the boy find the pictures because he didn’t want the 14-year-old to think there was anything “wrong” or “unnatural” about his curiosity. “Now thinking back, it might not have been such a good idea because look where he sits,” Kolbe said, pointing directly to Nicholson in the prisoner’s dock.
The court heard even more disturbing details as the defence continued to lay out Nicholson’s version. The teacher admitted to seeing the witness’s hand inside his own trousers during the night. When the teenager allegedly asked if it was okay to have an erection, Nicholson reportedly said yes, claiming he wanted the boy to know it was a natural part of growing up. Nicholson’s lawyer stated that the teacher then simply left the room and went to his own bedroom, leaving the boy to “do what you want to do.” The witness, however, flatly denied this version of events, insisting that Nicholson stayed in the room and that they masturbated each other throughout the entire night.
One of the most chilling allegations made by the witness was that Nicholson used his cellphone to take a picture of the boy while the abuse was happening. “I remember pretty much after everything was finished, the accused got up, went to his bedroom while I was still on the chair masturbating, and he came back with his phone, and it seemed like he was taking a picture,” the witness told the court. Nicholson has denied this, just as he has denied every other allegation of physical sexual contact. When the defence put it to the witness that Nicholson never touched him, the man responded simply and firmly: “He’s lying.”
As the cross-examination grew more intense, Nicholson’s lawyer began to attack the credibility of the investigation itself. Kolbe accused the investigating officer of “misleading the defence” and “influencing the witness” on what to say in court. The defence also pointed out mistakes in the witness’s original written statement, questioning how certain words ended up there if the witness claimed he didn't say them. The witness explained that he was speaking very quickly to the officer and didn't check every single word as it was being written down. He described the officer as a “kind, sweet lady” with whom he had no special relationship, but the defence argued that her kindness was a tool used to influence his testimony.
The trial has cast a dark shadow over the history of St John’s Preparatory School, raising serious questions about the safety and oversight of children in elite private institutions. With more than a dozen alleged victims linked to the case, the proceedings are expected to be long and painful for all involved. The witness who testified on Friday admitted that, as a child, he could not explain how a simple computer game turned into browsing pornography with his teacher, but he was clear that the night ended in a complete betrayal of trust.
As the matter was postponed to Monday for further examination, the courtroom remains a place of deep tension. The community is waiting to see how the court will weigh the teacher’s admission of looking at adult material with a child against the witness’s harrowing account of physical abuse. For the many families whose children attended the school during Nicholson’s time there, the trial is a reminder of the hidden dangers that can exist even in the most prestigious environments.
