"Cat" Matlala Faces Court Over Attempted Murder of Socialite Ex-Girlfriend
Alleged crime boss Vusimuzi "Cat" Matlala is set to appear in court on Thursday for pre-trial proceedings related to a string of serious charges, including the attempted murder of his socialite ex-girlfriend, Tebogo Thobejane.
Matlala, his wife Tsakane, and three other suspects are jointly charged with the attempted murder of Thobejane, accused of orchestrating a hit on the socialite and actress. The other suspects include alleged hitmen Tiego Mabusela and Musa Kekana, as well as Mabusela’s daughter, Nthabiseng Nzama, who will also appear in the dock as an accused.
In total, Matlala faces 24 charges, 11 of which are also for attempted murder. He has previously featured prominently in allegations of corruption presented at the Madlanga Commission.
Matlala is also accused of ordering a botched hit on businessman Joe Sibanyoni in 2022, as well as another attempted murder on musician Seunkie Mokubung, popularly known as DJ Vetties.
This court appearance marks Matlala's first since he was moved by Correctional Services from the Kgosi Mampuru II Correctional Facility to Ebongweni, the country’s most secure prison. The transfer underscores the seriousness of the charges and the perceived risk associated with the accused.
