Tragedy in KwaZulu-Natal: Two Drown Attempting to Retrieve Hippo Carcass

Mtubatuba – A somber incident has unfolded in KwaZulu-Natal, where two members of the local community tragically drowned whilst attempting to retrieve the carcass of a hippopotamus that had been euthanised in the Imfolozi River near Monzi. The incident occurred on Friday, prompting a strong caution from Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife and the iSimangaliso Wetland Park Authority regarding the dangers of approaching animal carcasses.

The sequence of events began when Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife officials discovered a hippo snared in the Imfolozi River. A large crowd of residents had gathered near the river, drawn by the distressed animal.

In a joint statement, the iSimangaliso Wetland Park Authority and Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife explained the difficult circumstances surrounding the hippo’s death. “Upon assessing the situation, our team determined that rescuing the hippo was impossible and extremely dangerous due to the muddy terrain and high-risk conditions,” the statement read. “In consultation with a local veterinary service, the decision was made to euthanise the animal to end its suffering humanely.”

Following the euthanasia, Ezemvelo followed standard carcass management procedures, removing key body parts, including the head and legs. However, due to the challenging river conditions, the remaining carcass could not be removed immediately and remained in the water while further options were assessed.

Tragically, members of the local community then attempted to retrieve the carcass, reportedly with the intention of cutting it up for meat. In the process, one person drowned trying to reach the hippo, and another drowned whilst attempting to recover the first victim, according to Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife and the iSimangaliso Wetland Park Authority.

“The loss of these two lives is deeply saddening. Our hearts go out to the families and loved ones of the deceased,” the statement read. “This is a heartbreaking reminder of the dangers posed by swollen rivers and wildlife carcasses.”

The organisations have issued a strong warning to the public. “We strongly urge communities not to approach animal carcasses or enter rivers under these conditions, as it puts human life at serious risk.”

Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife’s communications manager, Musa Mntambo, emphasised the inherent dangers. “The river is not just water; it can become a deadly trap in these conditions. We mourn the loss of life and call on everyone to act with caution and respect for both nature and their own safety,” said Mntambo.

Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife and the iSimangaliso Wetland Park Authority have pledged to continue educating the public about the risks of interacting with wildlife and natural hazards, emphasising the importance of safety for both humans and animals.
