Violent Crash in Gugulethu Injures Taxi Driver and Two Police Officers
A taxi driver and two police officers were injured in a violent collision between a taxi and a police van in Gugulethu, Western Cape, on the morning of Sunday, 11 January. The accident occurred along Klipfontein Road in NY 108, leaving local residents in shock as the two vehicles collided head-on.
Witnesses reported that the taxi driver was speeding and attempting to overtake multiple cars at once when he misjudged the speed of an oncoming police van. The resulting crash left both vehicles badly damaged, and all three involved—the taxi driver and the two officers in the van—sustained injuries.
Philasande Cuthalele, a resident who witnessed the aftermath, mentioned that the injuries appeared serious. “It was a sad situation. The officers were seriously injured as well as the driver,” he said, adding that one of the officers had suffered a broken leg.
Another resident, who was awakened by the loud bang of the crash, described the impact as so strong that it jarred her from bed. “I was still in bed since I had just arrived from the Eastern Cape late the previous night,” she recounted.

Emergency services promptly arrived on the scene to stabilise the injured individuals before transporting them to a nearby hospital for further treatment.
Police spokesman Frederick van Wyk confirmed the details of the accident, stating that a case of reckless and negligent driving has been registered. He reported that the Gugulethu police responded to the incident around 6:45 a.m.
“According to reports, the accident happened along Klipfontein Road in NY 108 when a Toyota Quantum taxi overtook two vehicles at high speed and collided with the SAPS vehicle,” explained Van Wyk. He confirmed that both police officers sustained injuries.
