Police Assure Arrests Imminent in Marius van der Merwe Murder Case
PRETORIA – National Police Commissioner General Fannie Masemola has assured the public that arrests are forthcoming in the murder of Marius van der Merwe, known as Witness D, who previously testified before the Madlanga Commission. Speaking to the media during an oversight visit to the ongoing Safer Festive Season operations in Pretoria on Friday afternoon, Masemola addressed the complexities surrounding the high-profile case.
Van der Merwe was fatally shot outside his residence in Brakpan, Ekurhuleni, earlier this month. His death has prompted a wide-ranging investigation, particularly given his prior testimony implicating suspended Ekurhuleni Metro Police Deputy Chief Julius Mkhwanazi in alleged criminal activities before the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry.
Masemola emphasised the intricate nature of the investigation, stating, "The investigation is still ongoing. There are more suspects who have been identified. It turns out to be quite a complicated case because it’s a case not solely about the matter of Van der Merwe. It links with other cases." This suggests that Van der Merwe's murder may be connected to a broader network of criminal activities, requiring a meticulous and thorough approach by law enforcement.
The Commissioner stressed the importance of building a solid case before making any arrests. "We are working through it. We don’t want to arrest and investigate. We want to investigate and arrest," Masemola explained. This approach aims to ensure that when arrests are made, they are supported by irrefutable evidence, increasing the likelihood of successful prosecution.
He further elaborated on the number of individuals currently under scrutiny: "Unfortunately, there are complications, but we have got quite a number of people in scope — not three, more than that." This indicates that the police are pursuing multiple leads and suspects, reflecting the seriousness with which they are treating the case.
Masemola also confirmed that law enforcement agencies are collaborating closely with the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (Ipid) on this sensitive matter. "At the right time, we together with Ipid will make the necessary arrest in that case," he stated. This collaboration underscores the commitment to transparency and accountability in the investigation process.
Last week, Masemola convened with the investigating team to receive a comprehensive briefing on the progress made thus far. Following this meeting, he personally briefed the Van der Merwe family on the developments in the investigation, demonstrating the police's dedication to keeping the family informed and supported during this difficult time.
Adding a crucial piece of evidence to the puzzle, Masemola confirmed that a white Chevrolet bakkie, discovered abandoned in Alexandra, matches the description of a vehicle captured on CCTV footage on the night of Van der Merwe’s murder. This discovery could prove to be a significant breakthrough in identifying and apprehending the perpetrators.
The funeral for Marius van der Merwe took place on Wednesday at Medley House in Brakpan. The service was attended by family, friends, and colleagues, all mourning the loss of a man whose life was tragically cut short. The police have pledged to leave no stone unturned in their pursuit of justice for Van der Merwe and his family. The investigation remains a top priority, with authorities determined to bring those responsible to justice and uncover the full extent of the criminal network potentially linked to his murder.
