Tragedy Strikes in Saulsville: Eleven Dead in Atteridgeville Shooting

In a devastating incident early Saturday morning, the peaceful community of Saulsville in Atteridgeville, west of Pretoria, has been rocked by a brutal shooting that has left eleven people dead, including a three-year-old child. Fourteen others were injured in the attack, which unfolded at an illegal tavern in the area.

Initially, police reported that ten individuals had lost their lives, with many more sustaining injuries. However, as the situation unfolded, SAPS national spokesperson Brigadier Athlenda Mathe confirmed the total number of people shot had risen to twenty-five, with eleven fatalities now confirmed. This included not only the young child but also a 12-year-old and a 16-year-old among the deceased, while the remaining eight casualties were adults.

The shooting occurred shortly after 4:15 a.m. on Saturday, but authorities were only alerted to the scene at approximately 6:00 a.m. “We immediately mobilised our resources, including forensic and ballistics experts, who were already at the scene,” Mathe stated. “Our detectives and the Serious and Violent Crime Unit are piecing together information on what may have led to this shooting.”

According to Mathe, at least three unknown gunmen entered the hostel where a group of patrons were socialising and began firing indiscriminately. This incident, and others like it, highlight persistent concerns surrounding illegal and unlicensed liquor establishments in the area.

Mathe underlined the significant challenges posed by such venues, noting, “Between April and September this year, we shut down 11,975 unlicensed liquor outlets nationwide and arrested more than 18,676 people found selling liquor illegally.” She added that these unregulated establishments are frequently the scenes of violence, where disputes escalate into deadly confrontations, leading to innocent individuals becoming collateral victims.

The police have committed extensive resources to the ongoing investigation to identify and apprehend those responsible for this heinous act. As the community mourns the tragic loss of life, the focus remains on addressing the broader issue of illegal liquor sales that contribute to violence and instability in South Africa.

This horrific event serves as a grim reminder of the ongoing challenges facing communities across the nation as they grapple with issues of crime and public safety. The police's efforts to combat illegal liquor sales will be critical in preventing further tragedies like this one.
