In a heart-wrenching turn of events, President Cyril Ramaphosa has expressed shock and sorrow following the tragic murder of Marius van der Merwe, a key witness known as "Witness D" at the Madlanga Commission. Van der Merwe was fatally shot at his residence in Brakpan, Ekurhuleni, on a fateful Friday evening, leaving the nation in mourning over the loss of a courageous voice in the pursuit of justice.
Ramaphosa condemned the brutal killing as an assault on justice and integrity, highlighting the grave impact of such heinous acts on the fabric of society. Van der Merwe's testimony at the Madlanga Commission shed light on an alleged scheme to cover up a murder involving law enforcement officials and Ekurhuleni top cop Julius Mkhwanazi, underscoring the significance of his contributions to uncovering truth and accountability.
The tragic incident unfolded as Van der Merwe, accompanied by his wife and child, was mercilessly attacked in front of his home, a stark reminder of the dangers faced by those who speak out against corruption and malfeasance. Ramaphosa emphasised the government's commitment to bolstering protections for whistleblowers and witnesses, reaffirming the imperative of safeguarding those who courageously step forward to expose wrongdoing.
Expressing his deep condolences to Van der Merwe's family, President Ramaphosa called for a comprehensive investigation by law enforcement agencies to ensure that justice is served and the perpetrators of this despicable crime are swiftly brought to account. He underscored the nation's unwavering resolve to combat corruption and uphold the rule of law, even in the face of adversity and tragedy.
As the country grapples with the loss of a dedicated advocate for justice, Ramaphosa's resolute stance against such acts of violence underscores the government's unwavering commitment to fostering a society where truth, accountability, and justice prevail, in honour of those like Marius van der Merwe who bravely stand for what is right.
