Forensic Investigator Paul O’Sullivan Accused of Sending Threatening Message
Forensic investigator Paul O’Sullivan finds himself embroiled in controversy following allegations of sending a threatening message to suspended Police Minister Senzo Mchunu’s chief of staff, Cedrick Nkabinde, during a parliamentary inquiry session.
Nkabinde, while testifying at the inquiry probing allegations against KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi, disclosed the contents of the purported threatening message sent by O’Sullivan. The message, which Nkabinde read into the inquiry’s record, warned of dire consequences, accusing Nkabinde of criminal activities linked to bribery.
The message, which Nkabinde shared with the inquiry, detailed O’Sullivan's intent to ensure Nkabinde faces incarceration, alleging misconduct related to Mkhwanazi and another individual named Mapula.
Despite O’Sullivan being a pending witness at the inquiry, his alleged message to Nkabinde raised concerns regarding potential violations of the Powers, Privileges and Immunities of Parliament and Provincial Legislatures Act, which prohibits threats or obstructions towards individuals providing testimony before Parliament.
Members of the parliamentary committee expressed urgency in summoning O’Sullivan to address the allegations of intimidation and misconduct, emphasising the need to safeguard the integrity of the inquiry process.
Emphasising the gravity of the situation, MPs underscored a zero-tolerance stance towards intimidation tactics, highlighting the importance of upholding the principles of parliamentary proceedings and ensuring the protection of witnesses and legislators.

Amidst the unfolding controversy, committee Chairperson Soviet Lekganyane assured Nkabinde of the committee's commitment to safeguarding his rights and ensuring appropriate legal recourse in response to the alleged threatening message.
Lekganyane reiterated the committee's confidence in the parliamentary legal team to guide Nkabinde through the situation and explore necessary steps to address the alleged misconduct, underscoring the imperative of upholding the rule of law and protecting individuals involved in parliamentary inquiries.
