Lamborghinis, Massage Parlour Seized in Raid on Nephew's Sandton Mansion
Sandton – Luxury cars, a massage parlour, and a fully equipped home salon were among the extravagant displays of wealth uncovered at Hangwani Morgan Maumela’s opulent Sandton mansion during a raid on Thursday. The operation, involving the Special Investigating Unit (SIU), the South African Police Service (SAPS), and the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD), aimed to seize assets linked to alleged large-scale looting at Tembisa Hospital.
The Asset Forfeiture Unit had previously secured court orders to seize all of Maumela’s properties and assets, including the Sandton mansion, as well as other homes in Bantry Bay, Cape Town, and Ballito, Durban, with a combined value of R320 million.
The three-storey mansion, resembling a fortress, boasts commanding views of the Johannesburg skyline through floor-to-ceiling windows. Inside, multiple bedrooms and dining rooms, each equipped with wall-mounted televisions, showcase hotel-style interiors dominated by cream, white, and brown furnishings, with paintings adorning the walls.
The operation was the culmination of a three-year investigation into Tembisa Hospital, where the SIU alleges that Maumela used a network of 41 companies to siphon off R820 million in just two years.
When News24 arrived at the scene, four SAPS vehicles and two JMPD vehicles were positioned around the property. Once it was clear that there would be no resistance, the vehicles departed, leaving two large trucks to load items being removed from the mansion.
Among the seized items were three Lamborghinis – an Urus, an STO, and an Aventador – all believed to be virtually brand new. Images of luxury cars were prominently displayed throughout the garage space, mirroring a miniature collection found on wall-to-wall shelves in the office.
In an interim report released by the SIU in September, syndicates connected to Maumela were identified as having secured the largest portion of the stolen funds from Tembisa Hospital.
The systematic looting of Tembisa Hospital was first brought to light by whistleblower Babita Deokaran just 19 days before her murder in 2021. Her warnings were subsequently published in a series of News24 investigations titled “Silenced,” which exposed the full extent of the corruption network.
Maumela is the nephew of President Cyril Ramaphosa from a previous marriage. However, Ramaphosa has publicly denied any relationship with him.
News24 also revealed that Maumela was pursuing a new R1-billion food supply tender in the North West through his company, Aloo Construction and Supply, which allegedly submitted fraudulent BEE certificates in its bid.
The SIU declined to comment on the ongoing investigation. The seizure of Maumela's assets marks a significant step in the fight against corruption and sends a clear message that those who profit from the looting of public funds will be held accountable. The investigation into the Tembisa Hospital scandal continues, with authorities determined to bring all those involved to justice.
