Tender tycoon Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala is expected to face seven additional charges, including murder, when he appears in the Alexandra Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday.
According to the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA), the state will apply for the centralisation of seven separate dockets linked to ongoing investigations across Gauteng.
“There are seven dockets that are under investigation. As the Gauteng jurisdiction division, we have to apply for approval from the national director of public prosecutions to centralise them,” said NPA spokesperson Phindi Mjonondwane.
The NPA confirmed that two dockets originate from Orlando, two from Sandton, two from Pretoria, and one from Vereeniging.
Matlala will appear alongside his co-accused — Musa Kekana, Michael Tau, Tiego Floyd Mabusela, Tsakani Matlala (his wife), and Nthabiseng Nzama, who is Mabusela’s daughter.
Matlala is currently in custody in connection with the attempted murder of former Muvhango actress Tebogo Thobejane, who reportedly fled the country after surviving a shooting in which her friend sustained a spinal injury.
Police later linked an AK-47 and two pistols, allegedly found in the possession of Tau, Kekana, and Mabusela in April 2024, to 18 crime scenes — including the murder of musician Oupa “DJ Sumbody” Sefoka and his two bodyguards.
The weapons were recovered following the assassination of Vereeniging engineer Armand Swart, who had reportedly exposed an irregular tender.
During testimony at the Madlanga Commission, which is investigating criminality and political interference within law enforcement, it was revealed that Matlala is allegedly part of a notorious cartel known as the “Big Five.”
The cartel is believed to be involved in drug trafficking, contract killings, and cross-border hijackings, operating both locally and internationally.
