KwaZulu-Natal – African National Congress (ANC) National Executive Committee (NEC) member and Police Minister on special leave, Senzo Mchunu, has confirmed he is ready to testify before the Madlanga Commission in Pretoria.

Mchunu was placed on special leave following allegations of collusion with crime syndicates. These claims were highlighted by KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi, who raised concerns about political interference, including the disbanding of the political killings task team.

Speaking to the media at Kwambonambi during a visit to the late Nathi Mthethwa’s homestead, Mchunu said he was prepared to give his account before the commission.

“I’m not going to make any comment but like any other person, when there are allegations against you, you need to get the opportunity and I’m grateful that an opportunity is coming for me to have my say. I’m ready for my own opportunity to address the commission,” he said.

Mchunu also paid tribute to Nathi Mthethwa, describing him as a figure who consistently put the interests of the ANC first.

“Nathi Mthethwa has created quite a void in our political space and within the organisation. Nathi has made an effort to understand politics and he made a contribution with an understanding that he was given an opportunity to understand in a form of political education and he played his role and did his best also as a member of the NEC and a cabinet minister. I don’t think we would want to say he owed South Africa, but he ran his course,” Mchunu said.

The Madlanga Commission, which has been investigating political interference in law enforcement and other matters, will now have the chance to hear Mchunu’s testimony, adding another layer to the ongoing scrutiny of senior political figures in KwaZulu-Natal and nationally.
