PA issues ANC seven-day ultimatum over Kenny Kunene’s reinstatement
The Patriotic Alliance (PA) has warned the African National Congress (ANC) that it will pull out of all coalition agreements if its deputy president, Kenny Kunene, is not reinstated as Johannesburg’s MMC for transport within seven days.
Kunene stepped down as MMC and councillor in July, pending the outcome of an internal investigation into his alleged links with controversial businessman Katiso “KT” Molefe. The PA confirmed this week that Kunene has been cleared of any wrongdoing and is ready to resume his duties.
Party leader Gayton McKenzie announced the decision on Facebook on Monday night.
“Within 7 days, if Kunene is not back in his position, every PA member in JB Marks [Municipality], every PA coalition with the ANC, you withdraw with immediate effect. Stay one day, one hour after instructions has gone out that you must withdraw from every coalition we have with the ANC. We are not going to be told by Dada [Morero]. Who does Dada think he is?” McKenzie wrote.
The controversy began in July when Kunene was found at Molefe’s Sandton home as police arrived to arrest the businessman. Molefe is accused of masterminding the 2022 murder of popular musician Oupa Sefoka, widely known as DJ Sumbody, and two of his bodyguards.
At the time, Kunene explained that he was at Molefe’s residence to accompany a young journalist from his online news platform, Africa News Global. His presence there sparked questions and led to his suspension from office.
Following the party’s internal probe, the PA has declared Kunene’s name cleared, setting the stage for a political showdown with the ANC should he not be returned to his municipal role.
