Deputy Principal Granted Bail After Rape Charges
A 53-year-old deputy principal from Bronkhorstspruit Primary School has been granted R5,000 bail under strict conditions following serious charges of raping an eight-year-old learner. The accused faces three counts of rape, with allegations that the incidents occurred on three separate occasions between June 2024 and August 2025, all during school hours on the premises.
The case came to light when the child’s mother noticed her daughter walking strangely. Concerned, she inquired about her behaviour, prompting the child to disclose the disturbing incidents. The mother reported the matter to the police, leading to the deputy principal’s arrest on 1 September 2025.
Lumka Mahanjana, the Gauteng regional spokesperson for the National Prosecuting Authority, confirmed the details of the case. In court, Prosecutor Mantshadi Tumelo Ledwaba opposed the accused's release on bail, arguing that he posed a flight risk given the gravity of the charges against a child.
Despite the prosecution’s concerns, the magistrate found "exceptional circumstances" that justified the decision to grant bail. The conditions of the bail require the accused to report to the Bronkhorstspruit police station twice a week, to refrain from contacting the complainant or her family, to inform the investigating officer of any change of address, and to attend all future court appearances.
The case has raised significant concern in the community, highlighting the ongoing issues of child safety within educational institutions. The matter has been postponed to October 24, 2025, for transfer to the regional court, where it will continue to be closely monitored by the public and authorities alike.
