North West Businessman Accused of Meddling in Police Affairs Has Criminal Past.
The North West businessman has multiple files against his name, including for assault, theft, fraud, and defeating the ends of justice.
A North West businessman, Brown Mogotsi, who has been accused of interfering in police matters, has a criminal history with several run-ins with the law dating back as early as 1997.
According to EWN, Mogotsi has multiple criminal files against his name, including for assault, theft, fraud, and defeating the ends of justice. All of the cases against him are confined to the North West province, where he owns and operates a bottle store and a restaurant.
Mogotsi was identified by KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi earlier in 2025 as a key figure in alleged interference in a high-profile investigation. Mkhwanazi also claimed that Mogotsi has close ties to Minister of Police Senzo Mchunu.
During an explosive briefing in July, Mkhwanazi claimed to have evidence of messages between Mogotsi and Vusimuzi 'Cat' Matlala, a tenderpreneur and underworld figure who is currently behind bars for attempted murder and money laundering. The messages presented by Mkhwanazi alluded to a collusion between the pair, suggesting that Mogotsi was attempting to derail investigations into Matlala by members of the political killings task team.
Mogotsi's claims that he is an informant for crime intelligence could not be verified. When EWN put detailed questions to him about his criminal history, he read the messages but did not provide any answers. The North West police declined to comment on the specifics of the cases against Mogotsi, stating that because he was scheduled to testify at the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry, they did not want to get involved. However, reliable police sources did confirm his criminal history to EWN.
