A violent cash-in-transit (CIT) robbery along Barry Marais Road in Dawn Park has resulted in the tragic deaths of two bystanders and injuries to five others. The incident, which occurred on Monday, has prompted a stern warning from police for the public to stay away from such scenes and to not attempt to collect money scattered by the robbers.

Gauteng police spokesperson, Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi, stated that the chaos began after midday when a silver Mercedes-Benz rammed a cash vehicle from behind. The impact caused the cash vehicle to overturn, landing on a Toyota Quantum taxi that was carrying seven passengers. "Five of the occupants sustained injuries and were given medical treatment while the other two escaped with no injuries," Nevhuhulwi said.

Following the crash, approximately eight armed suspects allegedly bombed the cash vehicle and fled with an undisclosed amount of money. A shootout then erupted between the robbers and a security company that responded to the attack. It was during this gun battle that two bystanders were caught in the crossfire and were tragically declared dead at the scene.

In the wake of this deadly incident, Nevhuhulwi issued a warning to the public. "Police urge the public not to approach scenes of CITs and also not to try to pick up money blown from the cash vehicles. The community should remain vigilant of their surroundings at all times and report any criminal activities on the SAPS Crime Stop Line at 08600 10111." Police have since launched a manhunt for the suspects involved in the robbery.
