Arrest Made After Deadly Ekurhuleni Cash-in-Transit Robbery
**EKURHULENI** – Gauteng police have arrested a man in Rondebult, Ekurhuleni, following a violent cash-in-transit (CIT) robbery that left two bystanders dead. The arrest was made just hours after the crime, and police recovered stained cash and two vehicles believed to have been used in the robbery.
According to police spokesperson Colonel Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi, the robbery occurred just after 1pm on Monday. The incident began when a silver Mercedes-Benz rammed a cash vehicle from behind, causing it to overturn and land on a Toyota Quantum taxi. The taxi was carrying seven passengers at the time. "Five of the occupants sustained injuries and were given medical treatment while the other two escaped with no injuries," Nevhuhulwi said.
Following the collision, approximately eight armed suspects allegedly bombed the cash vehicle and fled the scene with an undisclosed amount of money. A shootout then erupted between the robbers and a nearby security company that responded to the attack. Tragically, "two bystanders were caught in the crossfire. They were declared dead," Nevhuhulwi said.
The arrest of the suspect was a swift operation. Nevhuhulwi explained that "Gauteng highway patrol, together with Ekurhuleni metro police department, swiftly operationalized information received from crime intelligence and pounced on the suspect at a safe house in Rondebult."
At the house, police recovered a number of items linked to the crime. "The team also recovered a rifle, five magazines with ammunition, a few stained cash notes and two vehicles, a silver Mercedes-Benz and BMW, suspected to be used during the commission of crime," said Nevhuhulwi. The stained cash is believed to have been marked by the security company's dye pack, which is activated upon the vault being breached. Police are now on the lookout for the remaining suspects. "Police are on the lookout for outstanding suspects and investigations continue,” Nevhuhulwi concluded.
