SASSA Announces September 2025 Social Grant Payment Dates and New Biometric Enrolment System
The South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) has confirmed that social grant payments for September 2025 will commence this week. Beneficiaries are urged to take note of the scheduled payment dates to ensure they receive their grants in a timely manner.

In a significant move towards enhancing security, SASSA announced last week that it will implement mandatory biometric enrolment for all new social grant applications starting from 1 September 2025. This initiative aims to tighten security measures and curb fraudulent activities within the system.

The new Beneficiary Biometric Enrolment system will be rolled out across all SASSA offices nationwide. This system requires new applicants to submit either fingerprint or facial recognition data as part of the application process.

SASSA described this move as ushering in a “new digital era” intended to safeguard South Africa’s R250 billion social assistance programme. “The biometric enrolment is set to be a precursor to detect and nip in the bud any potentially fraudulent activities in SASSA’s grant system,” the agency stated.

The introduction of biometric data is expected to strengthen SASSA’s ability to detect fraudulent applications, particularly those involving forged green identity documents that frontline staff may struggle to identify.

According to SASSA, the biometric system will:

– Significantly reduce fraudulent applications and duplicate payments
– Verify beneficiary authenticity and provide proof of life
– Minimise inclusion errors
– Streamline documentation processes
– Enhance audit outcomes and strengthen record integrity
Improve public trust in the Social Assistance Programme  From 1 September, all new applications captured and approved will require biometric data through electronic Know Your Client (eKYC) systems. Any applications that do not include biometric enrolment will be placed under review, and applicants will be notified to submit their biometrics as part of the process.

“This initiative will ensure the enhancement of risk controls, contributing to a more secure and accountable grants system, whilst ascertaining that social grant recipients are living individuals at the time of application,” SASSA emphasised.

As the agency implements these changes, beneficiaries are encouraged to stay informed and prepared to comply with the new biometric requirements to secure their grants effectively.
