GQEBERHA – Police in the Eastern Cape are appealing to the public for assistance following the fatal shooting of a public prosecutor in Gqeberha on Thursday afternoon. The incident occurred in the Algoa Park policing district, leaving authorities searching for four suspects believed to be involved.
According to police spokesperson, Captain Sandra Janse van Rensburg, the prosecutor was attacked at approximately 15:30 in Lotton Street, Young Park.
Janse van Rensburg provided details of the incident, stating that the prosecutor had just arrived at her home when the attack occurred. "While still seated in her vehicle, a Toyota Etios, four unknown suspects wearing masks stopped with a white VW Polo in the street… got out of the vehicle and multiple shots were fired at her vehicle," she said.
The victim was immediately rushed to a nearby hospital for medical attention, but tragically, she succumbed to her injuries shortly after arrival. "She was rushed to hospital with gunshot wounds but died on arrival," Janse van Rensburg confirmed.
At this stage, the motive for the shooting remains unknown, and police are actively investigating the circumstances surrounding the attack. "The motive and the suspects are unknown, and the investigation is ongoing," Janse van Rensburg stated. The name of the deceased is being withheld pending official identification and notification of next of kin.
Police are urging anyone who may have witnessed the incident or possesses information that could aid in the investigation to come forward.
"Any person who could assist police with information in the investigation can contact the investigating officer at WO Errol Kleinhans on 083 243 4567 or Crime Stop on 08600 1011 or the nearest police station," read a statement released by SAPS.
Janse van Rensburg also emphasised that anonymous tip-offs can be communicated via the MySAPS App.
“All information is confidential, and callers may remain anonymous,” she assured.
The investigation is ongoing as police work to piece together the events leading up to the prosecutor's death and bring the perpetrators to justice.
Janse Van Rensburg said that the motive for the shooting is not yet known but will form part of the investigation.
“The name of the deceased will be released once she is officially identified,” she said.
The Eastern Cape police are committed to pursuing every lead and ensuring that those responsible for this heinous act are brought to justice.
