MITCHELLS PLAIN – A deadly shooting in Montrose Park, Lentegeur, has left one man dead and two others injured, further escalating tensions in the Mitchells Plain area. The incident, which occurred on Tuesday night, is believed to be gang-related, according to police reports.
The shooting took place at approximately 7.10pm in Veronica Street, Montrose Park, when unidentified gunmen opened fire on a group of men standing in front of a house. The sudden attack resulted in one man being fatally wounded, while two others sustained injuries and were rushed to hospital for urgent medical care.
Police spokesperson Captain FC Van Wyk confirmed that Lentegeur police are investigating a case of murder and attempted murder following the shooting.
"According to reports, unidentified suspects opened fire at a group of men standing in front of a house in Veronica Street, Montrose Park, fatally wounding an adult male and injuring two others. The injured victims were taken to a nearby hospital with private transport," Van Wyk stated.
The suspects are believed to have fled the scene on foot, and as of yet, no arrests have been made in connection with the shooting. The motive for the attack is currently under investigation, but police suspect that it is linked to ongoing gang activity in the area.
Michael Jacobs, public relations officer for the Lentegeur Community Police Forum (CPF), described the palpable tension gripping the community in the wake of the shooting.
"You can feel the atmosphere is tense," Jacobs said. "There are not intensive shootings as before after the last two weeks of continuous shootings and killings but the area is quiet but tense and people do not feel safe."
The CPF plays a crucial role in bridging the gap between the police and the community, working to address local safety concerns and foster a stronger sense of security. However, incidents like this latest shooting underscore the challenges faced in combating gang-related crime in Mitchells Plain.
