SAWS issues warning as double cold front hits Western Cape

Cape Town – The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has issued a warning to residents of the Western Cape, urging them to prepare for a spell of intensely cold weather. A cold front moved in rapidly overnight on Wednesday, 19 June 2025, and forecasters have indicated that another front is expected to follow tonight, intensifying the inclement conditions, particularly in coastal regions.

The SAWS anticipates that the daytime temperatures in various interior areas of the Western Cape could plummet to 10 degrees Celsius or below. Residents are advised to brace themselves for extremely cold conditions from Wednesday through Saturday.

The weather service has urged the public to stay informed about further updates and to exercise caution, especially in proximity to coastal areas.

In addition to the cold temperatures, damaging waves are expected along the coastline. A Level 2 warning is currently in effect until Thursday night. Wave heights are predicted to reach between 4.0 and 5.0 metres, potentially rising to 5.5 metres on Wednesday.

While the likelihood of significant rainfall remains modest at around 30 percent along the southern coast, particularly near George and Cape Agulhas, strong gusts and treacherous sea conditions are expected to be the primary concern.

The approaching cold fronts are expected to bring a significant drop in temperature across the Western Cape, with rain anticipated to fall over the weekend. The combination of cold weather, strong winds, and high waves poses a risk to coastal communities and those engaging in maritime activities.

Residents are advised to take necessary precautions to protect themselves from the cold, including wearing warm clothing, staying indoors where possible, and ensuring that vulnerable individuals, such as the elderly and young children, are adequately cared for.

Those living near the coast are urged to be vigilant and to avoid unnecessary travel near the shoreline due to the potential for damaging waves. Mariners and fishermen are advised to exercise extreme caution and to heed all warnings issued by the authorities.

The SAWS will continue to monitor the situation closely and provide updates as necessary. The public is encouraged to stay informed about the latest weather forecasts and advisories through official channels.

As the cold fronts descend upon the Western Cape, residents are urged to prioritise their safety and well-being. By taking appropriate precautions and staying informed, the potential impact of the adverse weather conditions can be minimised.
