Lady Zamar of the ugly jumpsuit speaks on her suicide attempt

Lady Zamar has revealed she once tried to commit suicide when she was a teenager. The musician opened up about her struggle in a lengthy thread on Twitter.

“When I was 16 I tried to commit suicide, I hated my life & couldn’t for the life of me understand what was going… on the outside everything was perfect…

“In matric I was treated for anxiety & mild depression, went to therapy for months (I was fortunate someone understood it),” she wrote.

The Poison singer says there is a “giant elephant” in society.

“We are predominantly black and African, so no one really teaches us with conviction that ANXIETY AND DEPRESSION ARE REAL.. That they are thieves and the worst kind of killers of the young and old,” she tweeted.

Lady Zamar also talked about how men, especially in black communities, are taught not to show their feelings.

“Men are raised to just be strong and be provider’s and to bottle everything in and to not cry.. A little boy who cries is told to wipe his tears coz boys don’t cry.. So they grow up NEVER SPEAKING ABOUT WHAT THEY FEEL, THEIR DREAMS OR THEIR TRUEST DESIRES.. Caged in from birth,” she wrote.

Women, says Zamar, are also not encouraged to talk about their emotions.

“Women are in turn told to be women, boxed into societal confines & raised to take care, nurture their homes, their children, their non communicatng husbands/partners who say nothing bout their emo to and their dreams are stifled for their duty and they are told not to complain.”

She says going to therapy is also looked down upon.

“Its a taboo and almost unheard of to go to a counselor, psychologist, psychiatrist in black communities.. Why you need to pay someone to talk to? Talk to us, speak to your family, don’t you have friends? That’s what most ppl will ask you.. So for some who do seek help, stop.”

Lady Zamar’s comments could not have come at a better time. Fellow musician Gigi Lamayne was rushed to hospital on Saturday after an alleged suicide attempt.

The rapper, who has also suffered with depression, allegedly took an overdose.

The incident occurred on the same day HHP was being laid to rest after a suspected suicide.

The kwaito star revealed in 2016 that he tried to commit suicide three times. He deleted his Twitter account that same year, saying it was a “toxic” environment and he could express himself properly on the platform.

Lady Zamar advised her followers to avoid social media and negative people as much as possible.

“REMEMBER THAT YOU ARE NOT ALONE EVER, THERE IS SOMEONE WHO WILL UNDERSTAND YOU, SOMEONE ELSE GOING THRU WHAT YOU GOING THRU, SOMEONE WHO CARES DEEPLY ABOUT YOU AND SOMEONE WHO CAN HELP YOU AND SOMEONE WHO HAS SURVIVED WHAT YOU GOING THRU!!!”
