What REALLY Happened to Mandla Hlatshwayo’s Millions? The Shocking Downfall of Big Brother Star Mandla Hlatshwayo!

ohannesburg, South Africa – Twelve years ago, Mandla Hlatshwayo was a household name, the charismatic winner of the inaugural Big Brother Mzansi, walking away with a life-changing R1 million prize. Today, the reality of life after the limelight sees him pulling long shifts in a pizza takeaway joint, the scent of wood and melting mozzarella a far cry from the glamour he once knew. His journey from television sensation to junior manager at a fast-food outlet is a stark reminder that fame can be fleeting, and financial windfalls often come with unforeseen complexities.

Hlatshwayo’s story is not just one of a fading star; it’s a candid confession of financial missteps and a battle against public perception. He still maintains that he only ever received R600,000 of his promised R1 million prize money, a discrepancy that he believes set him on a challenging path. “It was probably a month to get the funds, so in between that time you are meeting with financial advisers, planning what to do. Finally, the money comes into the account, and you’re like, ‘How many zeros are there? It’s not six.’ I got R600,000 and something. So I cannot honour the financial obligations that I had made,” he revealed in an interview. This shortfall, he argues, was a critical blow, especially as he was not informed prior to the payment about the actual amount he would receive.

“Ten, 12 years later, still [people say], ‘Here’s this idiot who finished a million,’” Hlatshwayo lamented, highlighting the enduring public misconception about his financial situation. His initial plan was a prudent one: to invest the entire sum and allow it to accumulate interest. However, the reality of sudden wealth and familial expectations quickly derailed this strategy. Instead, he purchased a R180,000 house in the Vaal, acquired a VW Polo Vivo car, renovated his mother’s house, and invested in his passion for music, recording music videos.

Reflecting on his past actions, Hlatshwayo admits to some regrets, particularly his public outburst on social media. “What I did wrong is how I reacted when I eventually got [the money]. I ended up going on Facebook, being as crass as possible. And a lot of my fans were not the same towards me because it’s like, ‘What happened to that humble guy?’” This moment of frustration cost him some of his public goodwill. He questions whether he should still be lamenting the missing R400,000, but firmly states, “But an agreement is an agreement.”

His spending choices, while seemingly beneficial at the time, ultimately proved to be liabilities rather than assets. “Now it’s like, instead of doing this thing that would have had a solid return, you are doing all these other things that are basically just sucking out money. As much as buying a car was a good thing, it’s not an asset. I bought a house, but it still needed to be fixed up, and I ended up selling it eventually.” He found himself juggling numerous projects and personal obligations, including commitments as a brother and a father. “There were just a bunch of things that didn’t go according to the initial plan. There are personal obligations such as commitments as a brother, as a father, and sometimes it’s obligations that we put upon ourselves. Obligations such as, if I have the money, why not touch up where I can? And there were too many projects that I was also trying to get started at the time.”

Despite the financial turbulence, Hlatshwayo found a different kind of jackpot in love. During his time in the Big Brother house, he met Lexi van Niekerk, a relationship that blossomed and led to them having two children. Their decade-long partnership, however, eventually came to an end. “It was one of those things where two people had something nice at some point and it ends. She’s still a great mom to my boys. But I don’t want that to be the only reason that we’re together or we relate.” Their relationship was once a public spectacle, even spawning a reality TV show called Mandla & Lexi on Mzansi Magic, which showcased their life after Big Brother. The show explored their relationship as they navigated various challenges and ventures, becoming a popular fixture on the channel.

As a father of three, Hlatshwayo’s current venture into retail management is a pragmatic step to provide for his family. “It’s just one of those things where life calls you to life. But I’ve been working for the longest time. Hospitality was one of those things that I said, ‘If this … doesn’t work out, I’d be willing to try that.’” This new chapter, while perhaps not as glamorous as his reality TV days, demonstrates his commitment to his responsibilities.

Looking back, Hlatshwayo expresses gratitude that his prize money was not squandered on destructive habits. “None of that money went on drugs or funny things. That’s the one thing I’m actually able to thank God for. My mother’s house is still standing; I still have a bunch of memories from the things I did with it.” He acknowledges the inherent challenges of maintaining relevance in the entertainment industry. “People forget that with TV you are hot for today, and then there’s another hot guy.” While he harbours hopes of returning to television and releasing music again, the path back to the media spotlight is proving difficult. “So, as much as I’d like to go back to the television space, maybe television doesn’t want me back. Because you go to auditions, you do all these things that you need to do to get back into the media space, but you don’t get the response that says this is the right way to go about it. I want to present.”

The alleged outstanding R400,000 from his Big Brother Mzansi winnings remains a contentious issue. Mzansi Magic had not responded to questions about this discrepancy at the time of publishing, leaving a lingering question mark over the full extent of his prize money. Mandla Hlatshwayo’s journey serves as a poignant narrative about the unpredictable nature of fame, the complexities of financial management, and the enduring human spirit to adapt and provide, even when life takes unexpected turns.
