Sabelo Gumede Battles Rare Cancer, Turns to Public for Support
Beloved comedian and actor Sabelo Gumede, whose infectious energy recently lit up e.tv’s Scandal!, has revealed he is facing one of the toughest challenges of his life. The entertainer has been diagnosed with stage-three choriocarcinoma, a rare but curable form of cancer, and is now appealing for public support to help him manage the overwhelming costs of treatment.
The diagnosis, made earlier this year, has shaken the 34-year-old performer and highlighted the vulnerabilities faced by many South African creatives. Gumede’s illness has already spread to his neck, lungs, spine, diaphragm, and lymph nodes, requiring extensive testing and treatment that has cost more than R100 000.
Although his medical aid has covered part of the expenses, those funds are now running low, forcing Gumede to rely heavily on his personal savings. With no acting roles currently lined up and his financial reserves dwindling, he has turned to a GoFundMe campaign to raise money for his escalating medical bills.
Public support lifts his spirits
In a heartfelt video posted on 4 September by entertainment commentator Jabulani MacDonald, Gumede thanked his fans for the outpouring of encouragement since he went public with his battle.
“I’d like to thank everyone who’s been so nice and supportive since I went public about having cancer. Your messages and encouragement mean the world,” he said.
He admitted that he was initially reluctant to seek financial assistance. However, a close friend convinced him to set up a fundraising campaign, allowing supporters to contribute — many choosing to do so anonymously.
“My oncologist told me this disease is first defeated mentally, and your texts and DMs really motivate me,” Gumede shared, noting how vital emotional strength has been to his journey. He promised to keep his supporters updated as he navigates both the highs and lows of treatment.
Donations trickle in
The GoFundMe page, accessible through Gumede’s Instagram handle (@ishu_sabz), has already drawn donations ranging from R1 contributions to much larger amounts. “Even if it’s R1, every donation helps,” he appealed, expressing gratitude for every act of kindness.
For Gumede, the campaign has become more than just a way to ease financial pressures — it is also a reminder that he is not fighting alone.
Wider challenges for artists
Gumede’s situation has drawn attention to the financial struggles faced by those in South Africa’s entertainment industry, where many artists work from gig to gig with no long-term security.
Earlier this year, veteran actor Glen Gabela also reached out to the public for help when he found himself struggling to afford medical treatment. His case, like Gumede’s, underscored how unpredictable and precarious life can be for creatives, especially when illness strikes.
Industry colleagues and fans alike have urged both government and private stakeholders to do more in providing safety nets for artists, many of whom contribute significantly to the country’s cultural life but are often left unsupported during hard times.
Fighting with hope
Despite the daunting medical journey ahead, Gumede remains positive. He has emphasised that he is determined not only to fight the disease physically but to stay mentally strong, drawing courage from the love and encouragement he continues to receive.
“Your texts and DMs really motivate me,” he repeated, underscoring how deeply he values the messages pouring in from all corners of the country.
As he continues his treatment, Gumede has pledged to keep the public informed about his progress, his setbacks, and his victories. His story, while heartbreaking, has also become one of resilience and solidarity, reflecting how a community can rally around one of its own in times of need.
For now, the GoFundMe campaign remains open as Gumede continues the long road ahead. And while the medical bills remain steep, the comedian says the support he has received is priceless, giving him strength to face each day with courage.
