Police have launched a manhunt after the body of a 33-year-old female teacher was discovered at her home in Mashamothane 2, Mmamatipa, in Limpopo’s Tubatse policing area.
The woman’s colleagues became concerned after she failed to report for duty at Batau High School and could not be reached on her cellphone.
They went to her residence to check on her at about 11am on Monday and made the grim discovery.
Police said the teacher’s hands had been tied behind her back with cable ties and that her body was in an advanced state of decomposition.
A murder case has been opened.
The circumstances surrounding her death remain unclear, and police have not yet established a motive.
Colleagues raise the alarm
The teacher’s absence from school prompted her colleagues to take action after they were unable to contact her.
Her colleagues reportedly went to her home to check whether she was safe. Instead, they found her body inside the residence.
The discovery immediately triggered a police investigation and the securing of the scene for forensic examination.
The condition of the body indicates that she may have been dead for some time before she was found, although the exact time and cause of death will have to be determined through a post-mortem examination.
Police have not released the woman’s name while the investigation continues and her family’s privacy is respected.
Police confirm murder investigation
Limpopo police spokesperson Colonel Malesela Ledwaba confirmed that detectives were investigating the killing.
The fact that the woman’s hands were allegedly restrained has become a significant part of the investigation as police work to determine what happened at the residence and whether she knew her attacker or attackers.
The motive remains unknown.
Investigators will examine the crime scene, gather forensic evidence and speak to people who may have seen suspicious activity in the area before or after the killing.
They will also work to establish when the teacher was last seen alive, who had contact with her and whether anything was taken from the residence.
No arrests have been announced.
Community urged to come forward
Police are appealing to anyone with information that could assist the investigation to contact the investigating officer.
Information can be given to Sergeant Mpho Mogale on 076 814 6522.
Members of the public can also report information at their nearest police station, through the Crime Stop line on 08600 10111 or via the MySAPS mobile application.
People who witnessed suspicious vehicles, heard unusual noises or saw anyone entering or leaving the residence are urged to contact police.
Those with information are encouraged not to confront anyone they suspect may be involved. They should instead share information directly with investigators or through the anonymous reporting channels.
Questions surrounding the killing
The discovery has left colleagues and the wider community searching for answers about what happened to the teacher after she failed to report for duty.
Police have not indicated whether there were signs of forced entry or whether the residence showed evidence of a struggle.
They have also not confirmed whether the alleged restraints were placed on the woman before or after her death.
Those questions will form part of the forensic investigation and the post-mortem process.
The advanced decomposition of the body may make the investigation more difficult, but detectives will use all available evidence to establish the cause and circumstances of death.
The case is being treated as murder, and further details may emerge as investigators interview witnesses and analyse the scene.
Investigation continues
The killing has raised concern because the victim was found inside her own home after colleagues became worried when she did not arrive at school.
Her colleagues’ decision to go and check on her led to the discovery and allowed police to begin investigating the death.
At the latest update, the motive was unknown, no arrests had been made and detectives were still searching for the person or people responsible.
Police are urging anyone who may have information, however small, to come forward and help bring the case to court.
The investigation into the murder of the 33-year-old teacher is continuing in the Tubatse policing area.
