A 32-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the mass shooting at KwaNdelu Shisanyama in Lwandle, where 11 people were killed and 10 others injured last month.

The suspect was arrested on Friday during a tracing operation at an address in Lwandle. He is expected to appear in the Strand Magistrate’s Court on Monday, facing 11 counts of murder and 10 counts of attempted murder.

The mass shooting took place on Sunday, 27 September, when three unidentified gunmen allegedly opened fire on patrons at the establishment. The attack left 21 people shot, with 11 later confirmed dead and 10 surviving with injuries.

Western Cape police spokesperson Colonel Andrè Traut said investigators recovered a Norinco firearm and six cartridges during the suspect’s arrest. The firearm and ammunition were seized for further investigation and forensic analysis.

“During the suspect’s arrest, police recovered a Norinco firearm and six cartridges. The firearm and ammunition were seized for further investigation and forensic analysis,” said Traut.

Police have not yet confirmed that the recovered firearm was used in the KwaNdelu Shisanyama attack. Ballistic testing will be conducted to compare the weapon with evidence from the shooting scene and determine whether it can be linked to the massacre or other crimes.

“Preliminary investigations indicate that the firearm belongs to a deceased individual and had not previously been reported stolen or robbed. Ballistics tests and further investigative work are under way to determine whether the recovered firearm was used in the mass shooting or any other related crimes.”

The arrest followed an investigation and tracing operation carried out by a dedicated team working to identify those responsible for the attack. Police have not released the names of the victims or the suspect.

The man also faces additional charges linked to a separate shooting in Lwandle in July. In that incident, three people were killed and four others were wounded.

Police allege that the victims in the July attack were playing music in vehicles in the street when two men arrived and opened fire. The attackers then fled the scene.

“The victims were allegedly playing music in vehicles in the street when two men arrived and opened fire before fleeing the scene. Investigations into both incidents are continuing, with police working to establish the possible involvement of other suspects,” he said.

The suspect faces three further counts of murder and four counts of attempted murder in connection with the July incident. He also faces charges of illegal possession of a firearm and ammunition.

The two cases will now form part of the court and police investigations as detectives work to establish the suspect’s alleged role in each shooting. Investigators are also examining whether other people were involved in either attack.

The KwaNdelu Shisanyama shooting was one of the Western Cape’s deadliest recent attacks. The three gunmen allegedly opened fire on people gathered at the entertainment venue during the early hours of the morning, leaving families searching for information about their loved ones and the community demanding arrests.

The attack prompted a major police investigation led by detectives from serious and violent crime units. Officers appealed for information and pursued leads to identify the people who carried out the shooting.

The recovery of the Norinco firearm could provide investigators with important forensic evidence, but the weapon’s role in the attack will depend on the outcome of ballistic testing. Police will compare markings on cartridges and other evidence with the firearm recovered during Friday’s arrest.

The fact that the firearm had not previously been reported stolen or robbed will also form part of the investigation. Police will work to establish how it came into the possession of the suspect and whether it was connected to the deceased person who was recorded as its owner.

The suspect’s appearance in the Strand Magistrate’s Court will be the first major court development since the September shooting. The charges before court are allegations, and the suspect remains legally presumed innocent until the matter is finalised.

The court is expected to consider the charges brought against him and determine the next steps in the case. The State may provide further details about the investigation as the matter progresses, although police will need to protect evidence and the integrity of the ongoing inquiry.

The July shooting adds another serious case to the investigation. Three people died in that attack, while four others survived with injuries after gunmen allegedly opened fire on people listening to music in vehicles on the street.

Police are investigating whether the same firearm, people or motive may link the July incident to the September massacre. No final connection has been announced, and detectives are continuing to gather evidence from both crime scenes.

Traut said investigators were also working to establish whether other suspects had played a role in the two shootings. The September attack involved three unidentified gunmen, while the July shooting was allegedly carried out by two men.

The investigation will therefore focus not only on the arrested man but also on identifying anyone who may have helped plan, carry out or support the attacks. Police are expected to examine witness statements, forensic evidence, ballistic results and information gathered during the tracing operation.

The arrest has brought some progress to a case that left 11 people dead at a place where residents had gathered for entertainment. However, police still need to establish whether the recovered firearm was used in the massacre and whether additional suspects can be charged.

The families of those killed and injured are expected to follow the court proceedings closely. For them, the arrest marks the beginning of the legal process, while the investigation continues into the people responsible for the violence.

The suspect is expected to remain in custody until his court appearance. Further developments are expected after he appears in the Strand Magistrate’s Court on Monday.

Police have confirmed that investigations into both the KwaNdelu Shisanyama massacre and the July Lwandle shooting are continuing. Officers are working to determine the full circumstances of the attacks and to identify all those allegedly involved.
