One person was killed and another airlifted to hospital after a 55-year-old armed man allegedly held people hostage on a farm in Amersfoort, Mpumalanga, before shooting himself during police negotiations.
The incident happened on Saturday, leaving police investigating murder, attempted murder and kidnapping. A 9mm pistol was recovered at the scene.
Mpumalanga police spokesperson Brigadier Donald Mdhluli said officers received a report of a hostage situation at about 06:00. Police were immediately dispatched to the farm to establish what was happening and to assist the people believed to be trapped inside.
“Upon arrival, they found three victims who had escaped from the hostage situation,” Mdhluli said.
The victims told police that the suspect was armed with a firearm and had held them hostage. The circumstances of the alleged hostage situation, including how the victims were detained and what led to their escape, remain under investigation.
Mdhluli said it was alleged that the suspect fatally shot a victim believed to be about 50 years old. He also allegedly shot another victim, aged about 53, and left him for dead.
The injured man survived the shooting. He was airlifted to hospital for medical treatment, where he was expected to receive care for his injuries. Police did not immediately provide further details about his condition.
After the shooting, the suspect reportedly withdrew to his house on the same farm. Officers then secured the area and brought in a team of hostage negotiators to engage with him.
Additional police resources were deployed to support the negotiators and manage the dangerous situation. The priority was to establish communication with the suspect, prevent further loss of life and persuade him to surrender peacefully.
“Whilst negotiations were underway with the suspect, he reportedly shot himself. He was certified dead at the scene,” Mdhluli said.
The suspect’s identity is known to police but had not been released. Mdhluli said his name would be made public once all relevant processes had been completed.
Police recovered a 9mm pistol at the scene. Investigators will examine the weapon and other evidence as they work to reconstruct the events leading up to the hostage situation, the fatal shooting and the suspect’s death.
Cases of murder, attempted murder and kidnapping have been opened. The investigation remains ongoing, and police are expected to interview the surviving victims and other witnesses as they establish the full sequence of events.
The incident has raised fresh concerns about the consequences of firearms being used unlawfully or handled irresponsibly. Mpumalanga Provincial Police Commissioner Lieutenant General Apaphia Modise expressed concern over the violence and warned that firearms can quickly turn disputes and threatening behaviour into deadly situations.
“Firearms, when mishandled or used unlawfully, contribute to violent crime and the loss of lives,” Modise said.
She urged members of the public to work with the authorities and report anyone in possession of a firearm whose behaviour raises concern. The warning applies even when a person is legally licensed to own a firearm, she said.
“Such conduct should be reported immediately to authorities before another life is lost,” she said.
The police commissioner’s appeal comes as investigators continue examining what prompted the alleged hostage situation on the farm. Police have not released details about the relationship between the suspect and the victims, nor have they confirmed what may have triggered the confrontation.
At least three people managed to escape before officers arrived, according to the initial police account. Their statements could prove important in determining how the situation began, how long the victims were held and what happened before the suspect allegedly opened fire.
The surviving shooting victim is also expected to be a key witness once he is medically able to speak to investigators. Police will need to establish the circumstances surrounding the death of the person aged about 50, the injuries suffered by the 53-year-old victim and the events that led to the suspect retreating to his house.
The crime scene will form part of the police investigation. Officers are expected to document the location, examine the firearm and collect other evidence that may clarify where the victims were held and where the shootings took place.
The suspect’s death means that the criminal cases will now focus on the alleged murder, attempted murder and kidnapping, as well as the circumstances surrounding the firearm used in the incident. The inquest and investigative processes will also be important in formally recording the deaths.
Authorities have not indicated whether any police officers were injured during the operation. No further arrests were announced in connection with the case.
For the victims and their families, the incident has left one person dead, another recovering in hospital and others facing the trauma of being held hostage during an armed confrontation. The community will also await more information about what led to the violence on the Amersfoort farm.
Police have urged residents to report threatening firearm-related behaviour before it escalates. Modise said early reporting could help prevent another person from being injured or killed.
The investigation continues, with police working to gather statements, process the scene and determine the full circumstances of the Saturday morning hostage situation.
