A 10-year-old child was wounded while lying in bed and a 52-year-old man was shot dead while collecting water in two separate Valhalla Park shootings this week.
The attacks have left residents fearful and prompted the Bishop Lavis Community Police Forum to raise concerns about a possible conflict between two alleged gangs operating in the area.
Police, however, have not confirmed that the incidents are connected or identified a motive for either shooting.
The child was wounded on Tuesday night, September 1, when gunfire broke out at the corner of 8th Avenue and Agnes Street at about 20:45.
A murder investigation was opened the following morning after the 52-year-old man was shot in Edmund Street while fetching water from a communal tap.
The two incidents happened within hours of one another, but police have not said whether the same suspects were involved.
The child’s identity has not been released and details about the child’s family are being withheld to protect the minor.
Child Shot While In Bed
The first shooting happened on Tuesday night in the area around 8th Avenue and Agnes Street.
Police said the 10-year-old boy was shot in the left arm while in bed. He was taken to a medical facility for treatment.
It is not clear whether the shooter or shooters were targeting the child’s home, another person nearby or a group in the street.
Police have not released a description of the suspect or suspects, the number of shots fired or the type of firearm used.
Provincial police spokesperson Constable Ndakhe Gwala confirmed that Bishop Lavis police had opened an attempted-murder case.
“Bishop Lavis police registered a case of attempted murder following a shooting that occurred at the corners of 8th Avenue and Agnes Street Valhalla Park on Tuesday 1 September 2026 at about 8.45pm.
“A 10-year-old boy was shot and sustained injury on his left arm. He was transported to a medical facility for treatment.
“The circumstances surrounding the incident are under investigation and no arrest has been effected at this stage,” Gwala said.
The boy was inside his home when the shooting happened, according to the community forum. Police have not confirmed whether the child was asleep, awake or in a room facing the street.
Those details may form part of the investigation as detectives work to establish where the shots came from and whether anyone else was in danger.
The child’s family is expected to face the immediate worry of his recovery, while investigators search for witnesses who may have seen people or vehicles in the area before and after the gunfire.
Man Killed While Fetching Water
The second shooting happened early on Wednesday morning, September 2, in Edmund Street.
The 52-year-old man was at a communal tap when he was shot.
Police were called to the scene and found him with a gunshot wound to the head. Medical personnel declared him dead at the scene.
The man’s name has not been released.
Police have not said whether he was approached by the shooter, whether he was followed to the tap or whether the attack happened without warning.
The early-morning shooting has also raised concerns about residents having to collect water in public spaces while violent crime continues in the area.
Provincial police spokesperson Sergeant Wesley Twigg confirmed that Bishop Lavis police had opened a murder case.
“Bishop Lavis police registered a murder case following a shooting on Wednesday morning, 2 September 2026, at about 06:40, in Edmund Street, Valhalla Park, where a 52-year-old male was shot and fatally wounded.
“Police members were called to the crime scene where they found the victim with a gunshot wound to his head. The victim was declared deceased on the scene by medical personnel. The motive for the attack is yet to be determined. The suspect/s fled the scene and are yet to be arrested,” Twigg said.
The victim was collecting water from a communal tap when the shooting occurred, according to the community forum.
Police have not confirmed whether anything was taken from him or whether the killing was linked to a robbery.
They have also not said whether the victim had been involved in any dispute or whether he had previously received threats.
Until investigators have gathered evidence, there is no official basis for linking the killing to any particular group.
CPF Raises Gang-Conflict Concerns
The Bishop Lavis Community Police Forum confirmed both incidents and said the two shootings may be connected to an alleged conflict between the Rude Boys and the Firm Gang.
That claim has not been confirmed by police.
The forum said the two victims were not doing anything that should have placed them in danger when they were attacked.
“A 10-year-old boy was shot through the arm while in bed on Tuesday night and on Wednesday morning, 52-year-old was shot and killed while getting water at the tap.
“We cannot allow our seniors and children to be shot doing nothing but living their lives. Please contact SAPS or the CPF with any information,” the CPF said.
The forum’s comments highlight the fear created when residents are shot in or near their homes and in public places used for basic daily needs.
A child being wounded while in bed has also raised concern among parents who fear that bullets fired outside may enter homes and injure people inside.
Residents may now be reluctant to walk to communal taps early in the morning or remain outside after dark.
The impact of the shootings extends beyond the immediate victims because families and neighbours must continue using the same roads, homes and public facilities where the attacks occurred.
Police Have Not Confirmed Link

The CPF’s allegation about rival gangs may assist detectives as a line of inquiry, but it must still be tested against evidence.
No arrests had been made in either case at the time of the police updates.

The CPF has appealed to anyone with information to contact SAPS or the forum.
People who were in the vicinity of 8th Avenue and Agnes Street at about 20:45 on Tuesday may have seen the suspects or heard an argument before the shooting.
Those who were near Edmund Street at about 06:40 on Wednesday may have information about the man’s movements or the person who approached him.
Residents with security-camera footage or cellphone recordings are also urged to come forward.
Even information that appears minor may help detectives establish a timeline, identify a getaway vehicle or confirm whether the two cases are linked.
Witnesses are encouraged to share information directly with police rather than confronting anyone they suspect.
No arrest has been made and the suspects remain at large.
