“The circumstances surrounding the incident are under investigation and the motive for the attack is yet to be established. No arrests have been made yet,” Twigg said.

Ward 106 councillor Nobanathi Matutu told the Daily Voice that she was unaware of the shooting when contacted.

A resident from the area said they had heard about the incident but knew only that a young girl had been shot.

The resident said the violence no longer came as a surprise to people living in the area.

“I heard of the shooting, but I don’t know anything else, except that a girl was shot. At this point, it is not shocking; as unfortunate as it is, it is normal and part of our daily lives,” the resident said.

The killing has again raised concerns about violent crime in Delft and surrounding informal settlements.

Community members say shootings have become a regular occurrence, leaving residents fearful and traumatised.

Police are appealing to anyone with information about the shooting to come forward.

Anyone who can assist the investigation is urged to contact Crime Stop on 08600 10111.
