On a wet Thursday morning in Hanover Park, three men were shot outside a spaza shop in Blossom Street, leaving one dead at the scene and two others fighting for treatment after a suspected gang-related attack.
The shooting unfolded on 23 July 2026 at around 10am in Newfields Village, Philippi, where residents say violence has become part of daily life. According to police, the men were outside the shop when gunfire erupted in broad daylight, despite the heavy rain that had set in across Cape Town’s southern suburbs.
Police spokesperson Captain FC van Wyk confirmed that officers from Philippi SAPS responded to the scene after the shooting. He said they found the body of a 36-year-old man with a gunshot wound to the head. Paramedics declared him dead on the scene.
Two other victims, aged 21 and 30, were also shot and injured. Both were taken to a nearby medical facility in private transport for treatment. Police said the 21-year-old suffered multiple gunshot wounds to the stomach and head, while the 30-year-old was shot in the left leg and arm.
Van Wyk said a murder case and two counts of attempted murder had been opened. He added that the motive is believed to be gang-related.
For residents, the scene was another painful reminder of how quickly violence can erupt in the area. One community member, who spoke to the Daily Voice, described the shooting as chaotic and said gang conflict continues to fuel bloodshed in Hanover Park.
“It is a terrible thing that is happening here in Hanover Park. We can’t say who is who because these different gangs are fighting against each other and there are such a lot of gangs.
“It is raining, but they’re still shooting. I was in my house when I heard a lot of gunshots go off, then when I heard commotion outside that was when I ran out and saw these guys were shot and one laying dead by the shop.”
A member of the Hanover Park Community Police Forum, who asked not to be named, said the victims may have been standing at the spaza shop shortly before the shooting. The forum member said there was no confirmation that all three men were involved in gangsterism, but added that the attack appeared to have been carried out by gangsters.
“We cannot confirm if all of them are involved with gangsterism, but they were shot by gangsters.
“Apparently, the victims were all standing by the spaza shop; some claimed they went to withdraw their Sassa grants.
“Here is a gang fight in the community which is causing these shootings.”
The remarks reflect the fear and uncertainty that many Hanover Park residents live with, where people often hesitate to speak openly about violence for fear of retaliation. The area has long been associated with gang tensions, and Thursday’s shooting has once again placed the spotlight on the deadly effect those rivalries continue to have on ordinary people.
