60-Year-Old Arrested After Engineer’s Body Found in Rubbish Bag
Police have confirmed the arrest of a 60-year-old man in connection with the death of 31-year-old Athlone engineer Suraan Windvogel, whose decomposing body was discovered hidden inside a black rubbish bag in Kewtown.
Windvogel’s body was found on Monday, 22 June 2026, along a sidewalk in Cross Boulevard Street, Kewtown, Athlone.
Police spokesperson Constable Ndakhe Gwala said the suspect was arrested on Friday, 26 June 2026, at about 9.30pm.
“A 60-year-old male suspect was arrested on Friday, 26 June 2026, at about 9.30pm. Once charged, he will appear at the Athlone Magistrate’s Court,” said Gwala.
Police confirmed that Windvogel’s family identified her through a bracelet found on her body. An inquest docket has been opened as investigations continue.
Family Faced Difficult Identification
A relative, who asked not to be named, said the family had the traumatic task of identifying Windvogel at the morgue. Her face was reportedly badly decomposed.
“She was identified by the bracelets and the black-coloured clothes she was wearing,” the relative said, adding that DNA testing is expected to be completed within two weeks.
Windvogel, from Bokmakierie, had no children. Her family described her as an engineer who had fallen on hard times after suffering a mental health breakdown and struggling with bipolar disorder.
“She was an engineer and had a breakdown and would sleep away from home when she would begin packing her things. It has been hard for us as a family, and this is very sensitive,” the relative said.
Family members said she would sometimes disappear from home during episodes linked to her condition.

Five Women Killed in a Week
Windvogel’s death comes amid a surge in killings of women across Cape Town, with five women reported murdered in the past week.
Last Thursday, 25 June 2026, a 35-year-old woman was shot dead at the corner of Boesak and Botfontein Roads in Kraaifontein.
“Kraaifontein police opened a case of murder following a shooting that claimed the life of a 35-year-old female,” Gwala confirmed.
On Saturday morning, 27 June 2026, a woman was shot in the face in Aberdeen Street, Woodstock, at about 7.03am. Woodstock police have registered a murder case.
Later that evening, police launched an investigation into a triple murder in the Kanana informal settlement in Gugulethu.
Western Cape police spokesperson Colonel Andrè Traut said:
“At approximately 7pm, three armed suspects shot and killed a 41-year-old woman, a 46-year-old woman, and a 21-year-old man. Several other occupants managed to flee during the attack and escaped unharmed.”
The recent killings have intensified concerns about gender-based violence and femicide in the Western Cape, as authorities continue investigations into the separate incidents.
