TWENTY THREE YEARS FOR THE MIDWIFE FROM HELL: The Secret Drugs In The Water: How Disgraced Midwife Yolande Fouchee Secretly Induced Labour To Speed Up Births

A Cold Heart In The Courtroom

The Pretoria High Court became a scene of long-awaited justice this week as 48-year-old Yolande Maritz Fouchee was led away to begin a massive 23-year prison sentence. For years, Fouchee operated under the banner of "You and Me Midwife-led Maternity Care," promising a safe and natural birthing experience to expectant mothers in Murrayfield, Pretoria. Instead, she presided over a "chamber of horrors" where medical negligence and calculated deception led to lifelong trauma and the tragic death of a nine-day-old baby.

Fouchee, who showed no sign of remorse throughout her trial, was convicted on a staggering list of charges, including culpable homicide, assault, fraud, and the employment of unqualified staff. The court heard how she consistently overlooked serious pregnancy complications, refusing to refer high-risk patients to specialists even when the danger was obvious. Her "unwavering arrogance" and refusal to accept responsibility for the lives she shattered made her one of the most reviled figures in the South African medical community.

The Secret Drugs In The Water

One of the most chilling revelations during the trial was Fouchee’s habit of secretly drugging her patients. The court heard compelling evidence that she would offer pregnant women water mixed with Cytotec or Oxytocin—powerful drugs used to induce and augment labour—without their knowledge or consent. This "reckless manipulation" of the birthing process was done to speed up deliveries at her convenience, often with catastrophic results for both the mothers and their unborn children.

The expert testimony from Professor Priya Soma-Pillay and Professor Izelle Smuts highlighted the extreme danger of Fouchee’s methods. By inducing labour in a non-clinical environment without proper monitoring, she was effectively "playing God" with the lives of her clients. Many women described feeling sudden, violent contractions and a sense of total loss of control, unaware that their midwife had intentionally triggered the reaction with hidden medication.

The Tragic Loss Of Baby Noah

The "heart-wrenching centerpiece" of the prosecution's case was the death of baby Noah Von Kloeg. On 3 April 2019, Fouchee induced Noah’s mother’s labour using her secret drug cocktail. Despite the mother showing signs of distress and the delivery being clearly complicated, Fouchee failed to seek emergency medical help. Little Noah was born into a situation of extreme medical neglect, and just nine days later, he passed away from complications that experts testified could have been avoided if Fouchee had acted professionally.

Noah’s parents sat through the grueling trial, facing the woman who had promised them a miracle but delivered a nightmare. The court’s decision to sentence Fouchee to eight years specifically for the culpable homicide of baby Noah brought a small measure of peace to the grieving family. "No sentence can bring back our son," a family representative stated, "but knowing that this woman can never hurt another child is the justice we fought for."

A Pattern Of Deception And Greed

Fouchee’s crimes were not just limited to medical malpractice; she was also found guilty of systematic fraud. She repeatedly lied to her clients about her qualifications and the safety of her practice, presenting herself as a highly capable professional while secretly employing unqualified individuals to assist in delicate medical procedures. Her "greed-driven deception" allowed her to charge premium prices for a service that was, in reality, a death trap for the vulnerable women who trusted her.

The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) praised the bravery of the victims who came forward to share their stories. Many of these women were left with permanent physical and psychological scars, struggling with the "lingering trauma" of their experiences at You and Me Maternity Care. It was their collective courage that eventually led to Fouchee’s arrest in June 2024 at her Murrayfield residence, ending her years of unchecked medical abuse.

Justice Served But Scars Remain

As Fouchee begins her 23-year term, the South African Nursing Council has moved to ensure she is permanently struck from their register. The "long road to justice" has been a painful one for the families involved, but the severity of the sentence sends a powerful message to the medical community. The Pretoria High Court’s ruling confirms that those who betray the sacred trust between a healthcare worker and a patient will face the full might of the law.

While the "Midwife from Hell" is now behind bars, the conversation around the regulation of private birthing centers in South Africa continues. The case has exposed significant gaps in the monitoring of independent practices, leading to calls for stricter oversight and more frequent inspections. For the mothers of Murrayfield, the nightmare is finally over, but the memory of baby Noah and the other victims will ensure that the lessons learned from this tragedy are never forgotten.
