Eastern Cape: Four teenagers shot dead in Motherwell house attack

0

Four teenagers have been killed and a fifth injured in a shooting at a house in Motherwell, Eastern Cape, with detectives in Gqeberha launching an urgent investigation into the daylight attack. The incident unfolded on Wednesday in Mnenga Street, NU10, at approximately 13:30, according to police.

Police spokesperson Brigadier Nobuntu Gantana confirmed that officers responded to a report of multiple gunshots at the address, where a harrowing scene awaited first responders. Inside the house, five males were discovered with gunshot wounds to the head. Four of them were found in the lounge area, while a fifth was located in a bedroom.

According to initial assessments at the scene, two of the four victims found in the lounge were unresponsive on discovery, while two others were described as gasping for breath. Paramedics and responding officers immediately attempted life-saving interventions. A fifth male, discovered in the bedroom, was also unresponsive and had sustained a gunshot wound to the head.

Emergency services declared three of the victims deceased at the scene. Medics attempted to resuscitate a fourth victim; however, he succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead on site. The fifth victim, who sustained critical injuries, was stabilised and transported to hospital for urgent medical treatment. His condition has not been disclosed at this stage.

Brigadier Gantana said all five victims were teenagers aged 17 and 18. Their names will be released once police have concluded the formal process of notifying next of kin. The incident has prompted a high-level investigative response given the severity of the crime and the vulnerability of the victims.

The crime scene, a private residence in the heart of NU10, was cordoned off for several hours as forensic specialists collected evidence and detectives canvassed the area for any leads. Preliminary information indicates the shooting occurred around mid-afternoon, but no credible witness accounts have yet been obtained to establish a definitive sequence of events or the number of assailants involved.

Providing a procedural update, Brigadier Gantana said: “A murder case with four counts and an additional count of attempted murder has been opened at SAPS Motherwell. The investigation is being handled by the SAPS Serious and Violent Crime Investigation (SVCI) Unit,” he said. This specialised unit typically takes carriage of complex, high-priority cases, reflecting the gravity of the Motherwell attack and the need for meticulous investigative work.

At this stage, authorities have not disclosed any suspected motive. No arrests have been made, and detectives are appealing for information from anyone who may have seen unusual activity in or around the Mnenga Street property before or after the shooting. The immediate vicinity and adjoining streets were expected to be checked for surveillance footage that might provide clues about arrivals, departures, and potential escape routes used by the perpetrator or perpetrators.

Brigadier Gantana underlined the lack of early leads, stating: “The motive for the murders and the identity of the suspects are currently unknown. No witnesses have come forward.” The absence of witnesses underscores the challenge for investigators and heightens the importance of any information the public can provide, however minor it may seem.

The victims’ youth has intensified concern among residents and officials alike. While formal identification is pending, the confirmation that all five were in their late teens adds a stark dimension to a case already marked by brutality. Detectives will be pursuing all angles, including the possibility that the victims were known to one another and whether the gathering at the residence was pre-arranged or spontaneous. Establishing the relationships between the victims and determining who had access to the house will be central to the investigation.

Forensic pathologists will conduct post-mortem examinations to establish the precise causes and times of death, while ballistic analysis may help identify the type of firearm used and determine whether a single weapon or multiple firearms were involved. These results could be pivotal in linking the case to any other incidents in the region and in guiding subsequent investigative steps.

In the immediate aftermath, SAPS Motherwell has broadened patrols in the area and maintained a visible presence, both to reassure the community and to encourage potential witnesses to come forward. Such visibility can be critical in the hours and days following a crime of this nature, as community members process what they may have seen or heard and decide whether to share that information with authorities.

The investigation remains in the hands of the SAPS Serious and Violent Crime Investigation Unit, which will coordinate with local station detectives, crime scene technicians, and any specialist support required. Detectives will also explore digital avenues—such as phone records and social media activity—subject to legal processes, to piece together the victims’ movements and communications prior to the attack.

Police have reiterated their appeal for public assistance. Anyone who can assist police with information that could help this investigation should contact the SAPS Serious and Violent Crime Investigation Unit detective, Lieutenant Colonel Sithole, on 082 457 2812. Tip-offs can be crucial in fast-moving investigations, and even seemingly peripheral observations—unfamiliar vehicles, unusual comings and goings, or overheard conversations—can help establish timelines and identify suspects.

As the case progresses, SAPS is expected to provide updates once families have been informed and as material developments occur. For now, the focus remains on tracing the perpetrators of a targeted attack that has left four teenagers dead and a fifth fighting for his life, and on bringing clarity to a crime that unfolded in the early afternoon in a residential street of Motherwell.
