A dark cloud of grief and outrage hangs over Khayelitsha following the alleged torture and death of Nonkululo Fente, a 39-year-old pregnant tavern owner, during a police drug raid. The tragic incident, which reportedly occurred on the evening of Thursday, 7 May, in the Level 2 informal settlement, has ignited a fierce debate about police brutality, accountability, and the stark realities faced by vulnerable communities. Nonkululo, who was four months pregnant with her second child, allegedly succumbed to an interrogation by officers attached to the Lingelethu West Police Station, leaving her family and community reeling in disbelief and demanding justice.
A Routine Raid Turns Deadly
The events of that fateful Thursday night began when a contingent of nine police members, including two female officers, descended upon Nonkululo’s tavern. Their stated purpose: a search for drugs. According to a family member who spoke to the Daily Voice, the officers reportedly found six straws, the contents of which remain unconfirmed. Nonkululo, in a desperate attempt to cooperate, allegedly informed the police that this was all she possessed. However, the officers, seemingly convinced there were more drugs, allegedly bypassed standard procedure. Instead of taking her to the police station for further questioning, a horrifying ordeal reportedly began right there in her tavern.
Allegations of Brutality and Torture
Witness accounts paint a chilling picture of the alleged methods used during the interrogation. It is claimed that Nonkululo was subjected to extreme forms of assault, including having a plastic bag placed over her head – a method commonly associated with suffocation – and being pepper-sprayed. The family member recounted the harrowing details, stating, “She did tell them, ‘You are killing me,’ but no one was listening.” The vulnerability of her pregnancy, they believe, made her more susceptible to the alleged torture. The situation escalated to a point where, after she lost consciousness, one of the police officers allegedly poured beer on her face in a callous attempt to revive her.
A Family Plagued by Tragedy
For Nonkululo’s family, this tragedy is compounded by recent losses. A family member shared the profound impact, explaining, “This was a traumatising incident for the family as Nonkululo’s brother passed away last year and her father passed away the year before.” The news of Nonkululo’s death reached her mother in the early hours of Friday morning, plunging them into yet another cycle of grief, this time intensified by the shocking circumstances of her passing and the loss of an unborn child.
IPID Investigation Underway, Political Outcry Mounts
The Independent Police Investigative Directorate (Ipid) has confirmed that they are looking into the matter. Ipid spokesperson Phaladi Shuping stated that the investigation has been finalised, and they are now awaiting technical reports. However, this assurance offers little comfort to a community demanding immediate action and accountability. The Alliance of Citizens for Change (ACC) party president, Masizole Mnqasela, has vehemently condemned the alleged actions of the police, describing them as “barbaric and extremely atrocious.” Mnqasela argues that Nonkululo’s “crime” was simply being poor and a woman, suggesting that a wealthier suspect would have been treated with respect and due process, including the procurement of a search warrant.
A Call for Justice and Systemic Change
Mnqasela further criticised the police for allegedly resorting to “old policing tactics” that exploit the perceived lack of resources among the working class and the poor to pursue legal action against the state. He drew a stark comparison, stating that the alleged killing of Nonkululo and her unborn child is “worse than apartheid,” highlighting the deep-seated anger and frustration within the community. The ACC is not merely calling for an investigation; they are demanding immediate suspension and criminal charges against the officers involved. A march to the Lingelethu West Police Station is planned for Wednesday at 2 PM, where the community will unite to demand justice for Nonkululo Fente and to send a clear message that such alleged abuses of power will not be tolerated. This tragic incident serves as a grim reminder of the urgent need for police reform and accountability, particularly in communities where trust in law enforcement has been severely eroded.
