Edwin Sodi Risks Losing Luxury Dainfern Apartment Over R480,000 Unpaid Levies

JOHANNESBURG, GAUTENG – For years, Edwin Sodi was the undisputed king of Sandton’s exclusive nightlife, a man whose presence in a VIP booth signaled a night of limitless champagne and five-figure bills. But today, the sole director of Blackhead Consulting is facing a much grimmer reality. The man who once spent R40,000 in a single visit to Louis Vuitton is now on the verge of being evicted—by proxy—from his own luxury apartment in Dainfern over unpaid levies that have sat dormant for nearly two years.
The body corporate of Borgo de Felice—ironically translated as the "Hamlet of Happiness"—has filed urgent papers in the Johannesburg High Court. They are seeking to compel Sodi’s company to pay R345,483 in outstanding levies. Once interest and escalating legal fees are factored in, the "Happiness" bill has ballooned to R482,900.

The Empty 'Hamlet'

According to court documents, Sodi has not contributed a single cent to the upkeep of the upmarket estate since July 2024. A trustee of the body corporate, speaking on condition of anonymity, revealed to the Sunday Times that the legal action is a last resort. The ultimate goal? A writ of execution that would see the property auctioned off to the highest bidder.
“The body corporate chose to head the legal route because all attempts to contact the owner of the unit have been to no avail,” the trustee said.
Hauntingly, the unit has reportedly stood empty for more than two years. In an estate where most owners either reside or collect lucrative rental income, Sodi’s apartment has become a silent monument to his fading fortune.
“I am not certain that the unit was Mr Sodi’s primary place of residence, but there has not been any activity or a person living there for quite some time,” the trustee added. “We are more interested in getting levy contributions, and his non-payment is putting the scheme at risk.”

The Rooiwal Shadow

The collapse of Sodi’s personal finances mirrors the disastrous failure of his professional ventures. Blackhead Consulting was a key player in a joint venture awarded a R291 million contract in 2019 to upgrade the Tshwane metro’s Rooiwal Wastewater Treatment Works.
The project became a national scandal when the malfunctioning plant was linked to a cholera outbreak in Hammanskraal that claimed 29 lives. According to Corruption Watch, the project was terminated in June 2022 with only 68% of the work completed, despite the contractors having been paid in full. The City of Tshwane has since moved to have Sodi’s companies blacklisted from all government contracts.
Sodi’s legal woes extend back to September 2020, when he was arrested by the Hawks in connection with the R255 million asbestos audit project in the Free State—a case that became a focal point of the Zondo Commission into State Capture.

Extravagance Amidst Insolvency

Perhaps most jarring is the contrast between Sodi’s mounting debts and his recent spending habits. While the Dainfern levies went unpaid, bank statements seen by the Sunday Times reveal a man living a life of obscene luxury on borrowed time.
In 2022 and 2023, even as creditors began to circle, Sodi’s accounts recorded hotel stays in London costing R18,000 a night and purchases at Louis Vuitton worth R40,000. The extravagance didn't stop there: R37,000 was spent on skincare products in Sandton, while two clothing items from the high-end retailer Mytheresa in London cost R43,000. A further R25,000 was dropped at the luxury marketplace Farfetch.
These sprees have now caught up with him. Just weeks ago, the Johannesburg High Court issued a default judgment compelling him to pay creditors more than R500,000 in debts arising from these very shopping trips.

The R50 Million Blow

The Dainfern levy dispute is merely a drop in the ocean of Sodi’s total liabilities. In January, the Johannesburg High Court ordered Sodi, in his personal capacity, to pay Hollard Insurance a staggering R50 million.
The month before, in February, it was revealed that his company NJR Projects—now rebranded as the G5 Group—was liquidated after failing to settle a relatively minor R1.2 million debt.
Despite the "Hamlet of Happiness" now heading to court, Sodi continues to maintain an image of wealth on social media, often seen in his collection of luxury vehicles. However, with the National Treasury considering a total ban on his business activities and the High Court moving to attach his remaining assets, the "Nightclub King" may soon find himself with nowhere left to park his Ferraris.
