Western Cape police are investigating after a 26‑year‑old man was fatally shot during an alleged smash‑and‑grab attempt on Wednesday evening in Bonteheuwel, Cape Town.

The incident took place at about 18:40 at the corner of Jakes Gerwel Drive and Jakkalsvlei Avenue, an area ward councillor Angus McKenzie has repeatedly warned is a known hotspot for smash‑and‑grab syndicates. Police say they attended a shooting complaint and found the victim with gunshot wounds; medical personnel declared him dead at the scene.

Member of Parliament Dereleen James, who says she witnessed the shooting while on her way home, described the harrowing aftermath on social media. “Here lies the lifeless body of a young boy [man] who was shot and killed on Jakes Gerwel Drive after a smash‑and‑grab incident. As he ran into the open field, the motorist opened fire,” she wrote on Facebook. She added: “Response from community, ‘Is reg so’.[It’s right] Reaction from kids, they continued playing around the body. Response from law enforcement, this happens DAILY on this strip. Is this really our new norm?”

Councillor McKenzie, in a community notice, warned motorists to be vigilant when travelling the stretch of road that links Dunoon, Langa and Samora Machel, saying the route has become a hunting ground for criminals who target vulnerable drivers at traffic lights. “I sincerely hope that those involved in these criminal activities begin to understand the serious consequences that come with terrorising innocent drivers on our roads,” he said.

Police spokesperson Sergeant Wesley Twigg confirmed the time of the incident and that the investigation is ongoing. “Police members attended to a complaint of a shooting and, upon arrival at the scene, they found the victim, who had sustained gunshot wounds to his body,” he said, adding that no arrests had been made at the time of the statement. Twigg said the circumstances surrounding the shooting remain under investigation.

Residents and local leaders expressed alarm at what they describe as a growing pattern of violence along that corridor. Community members have reported frequent smash‑and‑grab incidents where perpetrators strike at traffic lights and busy junctions, leaving motorists and passengers traumatised. The latest killing has intensified calls for stronger policing and targeted crime‑prevention measures in the area.

The presence of a parliamentarian as an eyewitness has sharpened public attention and raised uncomfortable questions about community safety and law‑enforcement responses. In her social media post, James lamented what she perceived as a muted reaction from police and the routine nature of such crimes on the stretch of road, prompting debate online about whether more urgent intervention is needed.

For now, the family of the deceased, neighbours and community leaders are waiting for answers as police continue their probe. Authorities have appealed to anyone with information, CCTV or dashcam footage from the area around Jakes Gerwel Drive and Jakkalsvlei Avenue at about 18:40 on Wednesday evening to come forward to assist with inquiries.

As investigations continue, councillor McKenzie reiterated the safety message to road users: motorists should stay alert, avoid stopping at suspicious scenes, and report any criminal activity immediately. The tragic death of a 26‑year‑old in Bonteheuwel underscores ongoing concerns about smash‑and‑grab syndicates and the urgent need for effective policing and community cooperation to curb this form of violent crime.
