A Mother's Unending Grief: The Double Tragedy of Uitsig Avenue
CAPE TOWN – The sun had barely set over the weathered concrete blocks of Uitsig on Saturday evening when the familiar, rhythmic crackle of gunfire tore through the air. For the residents of Uitsig Avenue, it was a sound they had heard far too often, yet for one mother, it was the sound of her world collapsing for the second time.
In a brutal and senseless act of violence on 28 March 2026, two brothers—Luchen Samuels, 19, and Angelo Hufke, 32—were gunned down in cold blood. They were not hardened criminals or gang members looking for trouble. According to family and community leaders, they were simply young men who had just finished visiting relatives and were passing a local gathering spot when the assassins struck.
The shooting, which occurred at approximately 8:45 pm, targeted a group of people gathered around a gambling table near the flats. The scene was one of utter chaos. Witnesses described the gunfire as "continuous" and "non-stop," leaving no time for the victims to seek cover.
The Scene of the Massacre
When the smoke cleared, Luchen and Angelo lay lifeless on the pavement. Medical personnel arrived shortly after, but there was nothing they could do; both brothers were declared deceased on the scene. The violence did not stop with them. Three other individuals—a 16-year-old girl, a 19-year-old man, and a 29-year-old man—were caught in the crossfire. They were rushed to a nearby medical facility, their conditions currently being monitored as they recover from their wounds.
"It is shocking what happened," said one local resident who knew the brothers but asked to remain anonymous for fear of retaliation. "Those brothers were not involved in any gangsterism or wrongdoing; they are usually a large group who gamble or stand by the gambling table. When those shots went off, it was continuous, non-stop."
For the victims' mother, the tragedy is a cruel repetition of a nightmare she has already lived. Years ago, she buried her eldest son, a victim of the same gang violence that continues to bleed the Western Cape dry. Now, she faces the unimaginable task of burying two more. When the Daily Voice visited the family home, the air was thick with the sound of weeping. The mother and her surviving family members were inconsolable, their grief a raw and visible wound.
A Community Under Siege
Bishop Adam Alexander, a well-known community leader and anti-crime activist, stood with the family, his voice heavy with both sorrow and a burning sense of injustice. Speaking on behalf of the shattered mother, he did not mince his words.
"It is with deep sorrow and outrage that we confirm the tragic and brutal killing of two young men, Luchen Samuels (19) and Angelo Hufke (32), who lost their lives in a senseless act of violence," Bishop Alexander stated. "The victims had just visited family and were passing the Gamble Pool area when unknown assailants opened fire. Both men were struck by bullets and tragically succumbed to their injuries."
He emphasised the innocence of the victims, a point that is often lost in the statistics of Cape Town's ganglands. "As a community leader and activist, I can testify that Luchen and Angelo were not involved in gangsterism. They were known to me as young men trying to make an honest living. They were inseparable in life, and now they are united in death through violence that continues to plague our communities."
The Bishop's outrage extended beyond the immediate tragedy to the systemic failure of the authorities to protect the people of Uitsig. "Since Thursday alone, three young men have lost their lives in the same flats. Families are broken. Mothers are grieving. Communities are living in fear like prisoners in their own homes while promises of safety and intervention remain empty," he said.
The Broader Crisis
The shooting in Uitsig is not an isolated incident but part of a terrifying surge in gun violence across the Western Cape. In March 2026 alone, the metro's murder toll has reportedly surpassed 30, with mass shootings becoming a weekly occurrence. Just weeks prior, six people were killed in separate incidents across Cape Town, prompting the provincial government to call for the deployment of the South African National Defence Force (SANDF) to assist the police.
Despite these calls and the presence of the Anti-Gang Unit, the bloodletting continues. Statistics from the third quarter of the 2025/2026 financial year revealed that the Western Cape remains the epicentre of gang-related murders in South Africa, with 257 out of 276 such killings nationwide occurring in the province.
"As community members, we continue to stand on the frontlines, often placing ourselves in danger to protect our neighbourhoods," Bishop Alexander continued. "Yet, the very government funded by the people has failed to adequately protect them. We call on the government to act decisively and demonstrate a genuine commitment to standing with this grieving family and the broader community."
A Plea for Help
As the investigation continues, the Ravensmead police have registered two counts of murder and three of attempted murder. Police spokesperson Sergeant Wesley Twigg confirmed that officers were patrolling the area when they saw people running and were informed of the shooting. "The motive for the attack forms part of the police investigation," Twigg said, adding that the suspects fled the scene and remain at large.
In the wake of the tragedy, the Uitsig community is trying to rally around the grieving mother. Luchen, only 19, was already a father, leaving behind a child who will grow up never knowing him. Angelo, the older brother, was his constant companion.
Bishop Alexander has made a public appeal for assistance. "At this time, we also appeal to society at large: Let us come together in unity and compassion to support this grieving mother. We ask for any assistance, financially or otherwise, to help give her sons a dignified funeral."

The Silence of the Streets
For now, a heavy silence has returned to Uitsig Avenue, broken only by the occasional siren or the sound of children playing in the same spots where blood was spilled just hours before. The residents know that until the cycle of violence and the availability of illegal firearms are addressed, more mothers will join the ranks of the grieving.
"No mother should ever have to endure such repeated loss," Bishop Alexander concluded. "This is not normal. This is not acceptable."
As the investigation unfolds, the people of Uitsig wait—not for the next promise of safety, but for the next sound of gunfire, wondering whose sons will be next.
