They Screamed Until They Went Silent: The Heartbreaking Truth Behind The Joburg Building Collapse

0

A chilling silence has fallen over Ormonde, Johannesburg, as the death toll from a devastating building collapse has tragically risen to nine. The two-storey structure, which was still under construction, crumbled earlier this week, trapping construction workers beneath a suffocating mass of concrete slabs and heavy debris.

The dust has finally settled over the Ormonde building collapse in Johannesburg, but the horror stories emerging from the wreckage will haunt the city for years. Rescue teams have retrieved the last of the nine bodies from the site, confirming a death toll that has left families shattered.

Witnesses described a scene from a nightmare. "They screamed until they went silent," one survivor recalled, detailing the frantic moments as the double-storey structure pancaked. The City of Johannesburg has since dropped a bombshell: the construction was entirely illegal. No plans were submitted, and no inspections were carried out.

Public Works Minister Dean Macpherson has called for blood, demanding that the developers be blacklisted. New Order Investments (Pty) Ltd, the developer, has finally surfaced to refute claims of non-cooperation, but the damage is done. With a massive shortage of building inspectors in the city—only 59 for the entire metro—many fear that more "death traps" are currently being built right under our noses.

This horrific incident has not only claimed precious lives but has also ignited a furious debate about rampant non-compliant construction practices and the glaring failures of municipal oversight in the city.

Search and rescue operations, a desperate race against time, resumed at first light after being suspended overnight due to safety concerns. Emergency personnel, working with painstaking care amidst the unstable rubble, managed to locate and recover three additional bodies on Thursday morning, bringing the final count of fatalities to nine. The scene has since been handed over to the South African Police Service for further investigation, with authorities now tasked with the grim responsibility of determining accountability for this preventable tragedy.

The immediate aftermath of the collapse brought forth a shocking revelation: the building was constructed in blatant violation of municipal bylaws. Robert Mulaudzi, spokesperson for Johannesburg Emergency Services, confirmed this damning fact in an interview with Radio Islam International. He stated, “The City of Johannesburg has confirmed that the building was constructed in violation of municipal bylaws,” further warning that the structural instability of the remaining sections continued to pose a serious threat, even after the conclusion of rescue efforts.

“There is a high chance that the building, we might have a secondary collapse,” Mulaudzi cautioned, underscoring the perilous conditions faced by rescue teams.

This incident is far from isolated. Mulaudzi expressed profound alarm at the escalating number of buildings across the city that flagrantly disregard regulatory standards. He highlighted a disturbing trend of structures being either illegally hijacked or erected without proper municipal approval. “We are really concerned with the number of buildings which are not complying with our city’s regulations. It’s either buildings which are hijacked or buildings which are built without proper approval from the city,” he explained.

The spokesperson stressed that such non-compliant structures are not merely an aesthetic blight but represent grave safety hazards, including heightened risks of fire and, as tragically demonstrated in Ormonde, catastrophic collapse.

Deputy Labour Minister Jomo Sibiya visited the site as preliminary investigations commenced, aiming to uncover the precise cause of the disaster. Meanwhile, several of the injured remain in critical condition, battling for their lives in Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Academic Hospital and Life Garden City Hospital. Many survivors endured harrowing hours trapped beneath the rubble before their eventual rescue, a testament to the sheer brutality of the collapse.

The Ormonde tragedy serves as a stark and painful reminder of the urgent need for stricter enforcement of building regulations and greater accountability from both developers and municipal authorities. The question on everyone’s lips is: how many more lives must be lost before decisive action is taken to curb illegal construction and ensure the safety of Johannesburg’s residents? The city, already grappling with numerous urban challenges, now faces the moral imperative to prevent such a devastating loss of life from ever happening again.
