IFP Backs King Misuzulu's Call to Rename KwaZulu-Natal to KwaZulu
Durban – The Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) in the KwaZulu-Natal Legislature has expressed full support for AmaZulu King Misuzulu kaZwelithini’s recent call to rename the province of KwaZulu-Natal to KwaZulu. This proposal, made during the 147th commemoration of the Battle of Isandlwana held in Nquthu last Thursday, has been deemed both timely and historically justified by the IFP.
The party believes that the renaming is a necessary step to acknowledge and rectify longstanding historical distortions. King Misuzulu announced plans to start a campaign to remove the name "Natal," a move the IFP perceives as vital in recognising the heritage of the Zulu Kingdom.
IFP Chief Whip in the KZN Legislature, Blessed Gwala, weighed in on the matter, stating, “The demarcation resulted in the loss of many parts of KwaZulu, which were placed under other provinces. The IFP feels vindicated by His Majesty’s position. It is well documented that during the Convention for a Democratic South Africa (CODESA) negotiations in the early 1990s, there was intense debate over the renaming of provinces, particularly Natal.”
Gwala further emphasised the party’s longstanding advocacy for recognising KwaZulu, underlining its historical, cultural, and political significance. “We further believe that His Majesty’s call opens the door to addressing other long-standing historical distortions,” he added.
As discussions about the potential renaming progress, the IFP is rallying support for this initiative, reflecting a commitment to honouring the legacy of the Zulu Kingdom in the province.
