SASSA Confirms Upcoming Payments for COVID-19 SRD Grant

The South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) has announced that payments for the COVID-19 Social Relief of Distress (SRD) grant will be disbursed between January 23 and 28, 2026. This news comes as many look to the temporary assistance programme to help during challenging economic times.

The COVID-19 SRD grant aims to support individuals who find themselves in sudden need and lack sufficient means for their basic living expenses. SASSA has clarified the criteria for eligibility, stating that applicants must be South African citizens, permanent residents, refugees, or holders of specific special permits related to the Special Angolan, Lesotho Exemption, or Zimbabwe Exemption Permit dispensations. Additionally, asylum seekers with a valid section 22 permit or visa are also eligible.

To qualify, applicants must meet several conditions, including being between 18 and 60 years of age, residing within South Africa, and not living in a government-funded or subsidised institution. SASSA has noted the importance of demonstrating a proactive approach to employment or educational opportunities, emphasising that applicants must not "unreasonably refuse to accept" such options.

Furthermore, eligibility requires registration on either the Department of Home Affairs database or SASSA’s database, which includes a unique system-generated identifying number for those without identity documents. This comprehensive approach aims to ensure that the aid reaches those most in need while managing resources effectively.
