Johannesburg – Johannesburg Metro Police Department (JMPD) officials have successfully cleared a hijacked property in Bryanston, Johannesburg, during a raid conducted on Thursday. The operation resulted in the removal of numerous wendy houses and shacks that had been erected on the premises, and the arrest of the alleged hijacker.

The raid on the Grosvenor Road property marks the third such operation carried out at the location. Prior to the raid, police visited the property on Sunday to issue a formal warning to the occupants, informing them of the impending action.

The property was reportedly hijacked in 2020 while the owner was on holiday in Cape Town. City of Johannesburg officials estimate that approximately 150 people were residing on the premises at the time of the raid.

The alleged hijacker has been identified to News24 as Lawrence Ramalwa.

During the initial raid in November of the previous year, authorities discovered that the main house had been subdivided into 33 individual dwellings. Additionally, 41 wendy houses were found to have been constructed in the garden area of the property.
