What began as a day of vibrant cultural celebration at the annual Mphebatho Troop Festival in the North West province tragically turned to devastation when a sudden lightning strike claimed the lives of two people and left over 50 injured. The incident occurred at Dertig Sports Ground, adjacent to the Mphebatho Library, in the afternoon of Saturday, 3 January, bringing the festivities to an abrupt and chaotic halt.

Families and friends gathered at Mathibestad Clinic in North West to check on their injured loved ones.

Thousands had gathered at the sports ground to partake in the annual festival, a cherished event that unites the community, cultural groups, and leaders in a lively showcase of music, culture, unity, and social cohesion. The joyous atmosphere was shattered as lightning struck just before the festival was due to conclude, sending attendees into a frenzy as they desperately sought safety.

Moretele Local Municipality Mayor, George Manyike, confirmed the tragic loss of life. "At least over 50 people have been hit by lightning at Dertig in North West. People were watching and dancing to the troopers in the ground. Some people from neighbouring homes were hit by lightning too," he stated.

The injured were swiftly transported to the nearby Mathibestad Clinic, which quickly became overwhelmed as scores of family members rushed to the scene, desperately seeking information about their loved ones. The influx of people caused significant congestion, requiring clinic staff and the South African Police Service (SAPS) to intervene and manage the distressed crowd.

Cars rushed to the scene as some attendees assisted medical personnel in transporting the injured to the nearby Mathisbestad Clinic. More than 10 critically injured patients were later transferred from the clinic to Jubilee Hospital in Hammanskraal for more intensive care. Family and friends continue to gather inside and outside the clinic, waiting for updates from the medical teams.

According to Mayor Manyike, six of the most critically injured were transferred to Jubilee Hospital. He urged patience and cooperation, stating, "Let's be patient and allow doctors to check everyone and don't interfere with services."

Following the incident, the festival was immediately suspended. Malebye, a local official, explained, "For safety reasons, the festival was put on hold immediately. This decision was made to protect everyone at the event, including community members, performers, and officials." Malebye added that the municipality is working closely with emergency services and local authorities to manage the aftermath of the tragedy.

Mayor Manyike noted the unexpected nature of the event, stating, "This is an unfortunate incident, and it's bad. We didn't expect it. People were enjoying troopers. Others were affected in their house next to the ground." He also highlighted the peculiar weather conditions, "It wasn't raining much. After the lightning, the rain stopped."

The municipality has pledged its support to those affected by the disaster. Malebye stated that the safety of the community remains their "top priority." The municipality extends its deepest condolences to the families of those who passed away and wish all other affected individuals a speedy recovery. The mayor will keep the community updated about the news of the affected.
